HDMI Output not working on Dell Inspiron 1525 - No settings to indicate HDMI output exists!

This question has suggested answer(s)

Laptop: Dell Inspiron 1525 with Intel Integrated Graphics Chip

OS: Windows 7 (bought separately and installed) 32bit

TV: LOGIK 24inch

Hello!

I've been looking around the internet for a while trying to find a solution to my problem but no-one seems to have quite the same problem as me...

Anyway, I tried connecting my laptop to the TV with a HDMI Cable and both the screen and the laptop don't seem to acknowledge the others existence. I know the HDMI cable isn't the problem since our PS3 has been working fine with the TV.

Pressing Fn F8 does nothing apart from turning the laptop screen on and off. Going into the advanced settings for displays and trying to connect to the tv manually doesn't work either, simply because the settings don't have the HDMI option (it only lists scart and other connection types). I've tried searching through all the settings I can find and none seem to suggest I can connect through an HDMI cable. In fact if there wasn't a port on the side of the laptop I wouldn't have thought I could!

Perhaps the port is there for show? It would explain my problem...

Any help if very much appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Did you change your settings on the TV to HDMI? If that does not work try the steps below.

    1. First you need a video cable for making the physically connection. For better picture quality, you should connect the computer to the TV using standard VGA ports or via the DVI to HDMI cable provided your TV supports these ports.
    2. Open the "display settings" in your computer and activate output to the TV screen. You can either mirror content of your computer on the TV or extend the display just like a dual monitor screen.
    3. Pick up your TV remote and switch to "External Inputs" from the menu. You will need to change the default "Video 1" to a different selection which may be "HDMI 1" or "Video 2" depending on how you have made the connection.
Important: Make sure you connect the cable to the TV before turning on the computer as sometimes it may fail to recognize external display.
You may also need to change the screen resolution of your TV using the Display settings in your Control Panel else the picture may appear distorted.

  • Hi Jesse

Thanks for taking the time out to help me. Unfortunately it's still not working.

The TV is definitely in HDMI Mode.

I'm using a working HDMI Cable to connect my laptop to my TV

When I go to display settings, it doesn't detect the display in the first place so I can't utilise the settings you talked about

I connected the TV and laptop before turning it on, but this hasn't seemed to help

Maybe since my copy of Windows 7 was installed after I bought the laptop (and was installed after my copy of Vista was wiped thereby removing everything on my hard drive), the laptop doesn't recognise that it has a HDMI port in the first place?

  • i have the same problem. i connect the HDMI cable to the TV and set the TV to point at that HDMI port. I connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI port on my Dell Inspiron 1100. I turn on the PC. The PC  and Windows 7 boot, not recognising that any external video device is connected although it shows a driver for its HDMI port with the name "Intel High Definition Audio Bus" and the description "Sound, video and game  controllers" when i check in control panel. Seems the HDMI port doesn't work for outputting video from the normal graphics card

  • i have connected my dell inspiron hdmi to dvi on my tv.All iget is my background picture. What can i do to complet the process to full  recognition

  • my pc is the inspiron 546.Same question as before

  • Hey sorry the problem ended up being with the tv monitor itself, and not the laptop. Try other things in the TV to make sure it's working.

One solution was that we download the drivers for the TV itself (personally thought this was rubbish...) but maybe that'll help some people

  • Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 5520 and I succesfully connected it to a samsung TV model UN26D4003BD via HDMI but when I tried to connect it to a other samsung TV it did not work. The problem is not the HDMI cable or the TV since the TV works with other computers and smartphones using the same cable. When I connected it to the first TV, I just pluged the cable and it worked. Please help me to connect my laptop to any TV.

  • Hello everyone. First thanks to people for replying, and sorry I haven't actually followed up on this! To the people who suggested the insultingly simple solution of unplugging things and re-plugging them or other obvious solutions, thanks but that really isn't the issue at all. I realise now that I hadn't made it clear that I am fairly competent around a computer and that this isn't a trivial issue.

For the people experiencing the same problem, I think the issue (for me anyway) is the lack of a driver for the HDMI port which means Windows can't properly interface with it. Unfortunately (again for me) as I have 64-bit Windows 7 Dell does not offer any compatible drivers so the problem must remain unsolved.

Another potential issue is that the HDMI port is a bit knackered, given the laptop is in its 5th year of use and I'm probably due an upgrade!

Hi i have the same issue although im using win 7 ultimate 32 bit,

again as above, im competent around a computer..... the issue only seemed to arise after either a windows update or nvidia update a few months ago, up until then i had full functionality of HDMI....

the port is simply just not showing on either control panel or tv/monitor

i have updated all drivers possible in the hope it would work but to no avail, i would rather not have to shell out for another laptop if a known fix is available it would be much appreciated

    many thanks

    Hello

Sorry I can't give you better news, but as far as I can tell there isn't really a solution. I've tested it with our student TV and it worked once, but then stopped working again. I think you're right in that it's something that's developed due to an update, however I don't have dedicated graphics memory so it might not be NVIDIA's fault. Unfortunately I don't think we'll get much support from Dell for an outdated model!

Depending on what you want to use it for, I've found VGA cables to be a reasonable substitute. We played a movie a projector connected to the laptop through a VGA cable and it looked grand! Obviously wasn't amazing but it wasn't terrible either and we were able to enjoy the film.

    Hope you get it sorted!

    Cheers

  • Hi,

Yeah i figured this would be the case........ i have resorted to using VGA when connecting my monitor but i use studio quality speakers as an output and get a lot of interferance which is really annoying,

but my new samsung tv doesnt support VGA so i am kinda snookered if i want to connect to it,

many thanks for the quick response
