I have a brand new U2713 hooked up to DP on a new Macbook Pro. I hooked my external speakers (not a Dell soundbar) to the audio out of the monitor. I was on a GoToMeeting and sound was fine and then it cut out. GTM showed LED gauge of audio activity even though I couldn't hear it. I then flipped GTM audio to the laptop and it turned on. I flipped it back to the U2713 and it turned off. Ended up finishing my GTM with audio out on the mac.
Went to sound controls and when I double click an alert sound, if U2713 is selected, it does play. If I change to Internal speaker it does.
I unplugged the U2713 for a few seconds, plugged it back in and the sound control test still failed. Very odd, the sound was working yesterday through the monitor.
Any ideas?
DIsconnected out cable from monitor and plugged into headphone jack of macbook and tested sound, worked fine. Plugged it back into monitor and now speakers working. Very odd. I guess I'll wait to see if it stops working again.
Was watching a video with sound through monitor to external speakers, then sound cut out again. Switched to internal speakers on laptop worked, back to monitor didn't, back to internal. What's up with that?
On Windows based systems, you have to designate/check the monitor as the default audio playback device in the audio playback controls. Unfortunately, we have no idea how to do this on untested Apple products. You should post on the Apple Discussions Forum and see what they say.

I have set it and it was using it. The question/problem is more... why does it stop working. When I go back to the settings they are still correct.
No idea. My guess is the Apple is not sending the audio all the time through its DP out. As I stated, ask the Apple users on their forum.
