Icon and Resolution size for Dell monitor

Changed to Windows 7 from XP on new pc.  When we booted up the information on screen would not fit.  Checked against another pc in office and it shows monitor as Dell 1704 FPV but this new one shows Generic Monitor in Control Panel/Display?  How does computer know what type of monitor.  How do you change from generic monitor to Dell 1704 FPV??

    After moving from XP to Windows 7, compatible device drivers have to be installed for all system components. Though 'Windows 7' has the knack of pulling up the monitor's driver information by itself, it is likely that the video card drivers are missing or corrupt. Try running MS Fix-It to see if that fixes 'display quality issues': http://bit.ly/PQgiEY

    If the issue persists, please check the status of device drivers in 'Device Manager'. You may find the following steps useful:
    - Click Pearl Icon
    - Click inside 'Search Programs and Files'
    - Type 'devmgmt.msc' (without quotation)
    - Hit 'Enter' Key
    - Device Manager Page opens up
    - Expand option 'Display Adapters'
    - Please check if any item listed under 'Display Adapters' has a yellow mark besides it (Capture details if observed)
    - Even if no yellow mark is observed, please capture the name of device listed under this category
    - Also browse through the list of all devices listed on this page and capture information of all items with yellow marks (Yellow mark indicates a missing or corrupt device driver)

    I would also like to know if you if you are using a Dell computer with this monitor. If yes, please share the model name also. Please tell if you installed all relevant device drivers after moving to 'Windows 7'?

  • Tried MS Fixit for monitor resolution and now have black monitor with message about "Analog input cannot display this video mode"  Had Dell support do chat session and tried bringing up with different monitor and get same black screen.  They are going to replace motherboard.  Unsure why motherboard when ok until we ran MS Fixit?

    Thank you for your response. MS Fixit works on optimizing the resolution settings in 'Windows' and should not have any direct impact on the motherboard of your computer. However the system board may have been on verge of collapse already. It may be a coincidence that the motherboard failed immediately after you ran the Microsoft fixit program.

    Analog input cannot display this video mode generally means that the monitor is unable to synchronize with the signal that it is receiving from the computer. Either the signal is too high or too low for the monitor to use. You may try the following troubleshooting steps before the motherboard replacement to see if the issue gets fixed:

    1. Perform monitor reset
    - Push the MENU button to open the OSD system and display the main menu
      
    - Push - and + button to select 'Factory Reset'. Push the MENU button once to activate the highlighted option
    - Push menu to enter the slide bar and then use the - and + buttons, according to the indicators on the menu, to make your changes
    - Push the Menu button once to return to the main menu to select another option or push the Menu button two or three times to exit from the OSD
    - If issue does not get fixed, use the Input Select button (B) to select between two different video signals that may be connected to your monitor (Refer to image below)
      

    2. If the issue still persists, perform monitor self-test feature check to determine the screen functionality
    - Unplug the monitor cable from the back of the computer tower
    - Ensure that the monitor's power cable is plugged in
    - Power on the monitor
    - The floating 'Dell - Self-test Feature Check' dialog appears (against a black background) if the monitor cannot sense a video signal. Depending upon the selected input, one of the dialogs shown below will scroll continually
      
    - If the monitor screen displays a similar looking 'floating box' it indicates a healthy monitor; else it may be an issue with the monitor also

    3. If the monitor passes the 'Self Test Feature Check', please have a close look at the monitor connector pins. Check if they are bent or broken. If yes, replace the cable and re-check. If the cable pins look in good shape, try releasing static power

    4. If no abnormality is observed in connector pins, try releasing static discharge from the computer
    - Power off the computer
    - Isolate the system tower completely (Unplug all connections, devices and cables from the back of the tower)
    - Press and hold the power button on the tower for 15 - 20 seconds
    - Release the power button
    - Plug the power cable, monitor cable, keyboard and mouse back in
    - Power the computer back on and check results

  • OK found out was not motherboard but monitor worked after reloading video drivers. Software not hardware.  Believe that MS Fixit maxed out capabilities of monitor and lost/corrupted communication.  So now back to original problem. Have a Dell monitor with pc all information and resolutions are fine.  Same configuration - same monitor and different sizes of icons for exact same size of 1024-768?  Crazy.  Icons are larger and information on screen does not fit into full screen. Any other ideas.

    Thank you for your response. Since both the monitors are same and are exhibiting different behavior with the same tower, it appears to be a configuration issue with the monitor itself. Just wanted to check if you tried resetting the monitor back to factory default settings. If not done so far, please follow through with the monitor troubleshooting steps I mentioned in the previous post. Do reply with the findings. I would be glad to assist.

  • Ok had a 19 inch monitor that ran fine with new VGA cord.  Then went back to Dell 1704 monitor and compared settings under Menu on the monitor of that monitor to my Dell monitor.  Made all exactly the same.  Also kept the same VGA cord.  Appears all is working since been up all day.  if all continues could be VGA cord purchased at Office Max?  All I know it was a long week of chasing rabbits.
