Monitors with a service tag number purchased from Dell

* Go to this site and register the monitor service tag in your name. Once completed in 15 business days, you will get an email from Dell stating that it is done
* Dell will provide a 3 year warranty starting on the original purchase date as shown by the service tag number. Not from when you purchased it from the reseller

Monitors without a service tag number purchased from Dell
When purchased from Dell, you receive a Dell Order and Dell Customer number. This order number automatically "registers" you to the monitor and tells the start and end date of the purchased warranty. You cannot register a monitor via the online tools without a service tag number. The order number also tells us what warranty period you purchased. If you ever need it exchanged while under warranty, you must contact Customer Service via phone (not Technical Support) for your country and provide to them the following information -

* Based on the monitor 20 digit PPID serial number date code, Dell will warranty the monitor for 3 years

Dell Monitor Replacement Policy and Procedure - Dell Global Policy

The customer is unable to provide a Dell Order Number or system Service Tag because the customer purchased the monitor from a retailer. The only information the customer has is the PPID serial number for the monitor. For monitors where there is not a Dell order number available, agents will use the date code embedded in the monitor PPID serial number to determine the date when coverage started.

Discussion = The warranty will be 3 years starting from the embedded PPID serial date on the label.
Solution = Set up the monitor replacement against the dummy tag.
* You would provide the following data to the Customer Service representative if you ever need a monitor replacement within that 3 year period:

Monitors without a service tag number purchased from a person (Ebay, Craigslist, auctions)
* Jim buys directly from Dell a 24" or smaller monitor with 3 year warranty coverage. The warranty, Dell Customer and Order number are still attached to Jim
* 24" and smaller Dell monitors do not get a service tag number so you cannot "register" them using the Dell online tools
* Jim sells the monitor to Andy through ebay, craigslist, auction, etc. We can no longer "move" the warranty for that monitor from Jim to Andy. Andy should gather this information from the seller (Jim) at the point of sale and save it -

* If the monitor fails within the purchased period from the invoice date on the original purchasers Order number, Andy will call in to Customer Service via phone and provide the sellers (Jim) information to us so that we can look up the Order number and see the warranty purchased. We would then use Jims Order number to setup the monitor exchange but change the "ship to" address to Andy
* The onus is on the buyer to verify that the seller will provide all of the information needed by us to verify the warranty. If the buyer cannot provide the sellers information, we will not warranty the monitor
