Dell 922 Printer trouble installing

  • First of all PudgyOne, thank you very much! Your posts helped me 2 years ago with my Dell AIO 922 printer running with mixed environment of XP and Win7 computers.

Now we have just 3 Win7 laptops in the house, all recent machines. The strange thing is, the Dell Inspiron I just bought is the one that I cannot get to work. Right now, I just want to get it running when directly connected via USB cable.  I used your procedure above to the letter, many times with every variation I can think of. I used the R166239 CleanUp utility - which takes 30+ minutes, but does seems to remove all the 922 printer files and drivers. Then installed the R151379 (Vista 64 bit) driver package as directed - in Vista SP2 compatability mode.

I get thru the procedure and all seems hunky-dory until I try to print the test page from the printer properties dialog. It tells me I have a communication problem and suggests I enable bidirectional support. Unfortunately, this option is greyed out in the dialog. This is the end result each time I try. Also, I notice that the driver version from Printing Preferences/Help/About is 1.0.5.2. On my successful laptop (Sony Vaio) I used the same R151379 driver file, but ended up with version 1.0.6.1.

I can't make any sense of this. Any suggestions would be very welcome!!

    Thanks!

  • IndyBB,

First, how is the printer connected, to a host computer or some type of wireless print adapter?

Make and model of the problem computer and operating system. 32-bit or 64-bit?

Operating system in English or another language?

What virus program and firewall is on the computer?

  • PudgyOne,

    Here's the info requested:

First, how is the printer connected, to a host computer or some type of wireless print adapter?

Direct USB cable to the laptop. That's all.

Make and model of the problem computer and operating system. 32-bit or 64-bit?

Dell N5110 Inspiron Laptop. Just purchased. 64 bit Win7.

Operating system in English or another language?

       US English

What virus program and firewall is on the computer?

McAfee Internet Security - Part of a 3 PC subscription for my home.

What virus program and firewall is on the host computer?

Same answer as above... I think.

    Thanks!!!

  • IndyBB,

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.

    Disconnect the printer.

Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed.
    Manual Printer Driver Removal

Download the Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 7 32-bit or the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista
Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).

Links to the patch/drivers can be found at...

    Also try reading...

    Allowing Printer past McAfee

    1. Open the McAfee Security Center and then click on the ‘Internet and Network’

    2. To the right of ‘Internet and Network’ you would see all the services that are present under it, just below that you would have a button ‘Configure’ please click on that.

    3. Now you would have the Internet and Network Configuration, in this window you would have an option ‘Firewall Protection in Enabled’ to the right of that you would have a downward arrow, click on that.

    4. Then click on the ‘Advanced’ button which would have a new screen up.

    5. To the left of that window you would have ‘System Services’ click on it and to the right pane of the window you would have the ports listed.

    6. Please check the option which is for ‘Windows File Sharing’ then click on ‘Apply’ and then ‘Ok’

    7. Restart the computer

  • Thank you Rick.

I enabled the TCP 137 to 139 (netbios)  and 445 in addition to what mcafee had. I thought that would do it. Ran thru the whole clean and install process a couple more times, including removing the USB devices.

I'm still getting the exact same result. Unable to communicate and it suggests I should enable bidirectional support - which is greyed out. This result has been very stable. I must have something simple that is wrong. Once again, my other win7 64 bit laptop prints from direct USB connection just fine.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks very much!

  • IndyBB,

A stuck print job in the queue will not allow the printer to uninstall properly.

Did you run Delete Print Jobs

Disconnect the usb cable to the printer

    Run the patch(printer cleanup utility)

    Restart the computer.

Make sure the printer was removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Install the drivers first, connect the printer when prompter and allow past McAfee?

  • Yes, checked windows/system32/spool/printers or whatever as given in the link. There was nothing there. Checked several times. Never seemed like things were getting stuck in the spooler.

Yes. Yes. Each time you give the same process and I have followed patiently and exactly.  It's not working. There must be something else. Scanning works.

Do you know if R151379 is the only Vista 64 driver for the AIO 922?

This install package gives me vers 1.0.5.2. The same install package gave me 1.0.6.1 on my other win7 laptop that prints fine. Strange, right?

    Thanks

  • IndyBB,

When you installed the Vista 64-bit drivers, did you install them in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode ?

Download the System Information Tool If using Vista/Windows 7, the tool needs extracted. Once extracted, right click on sysinfo and run as administrator.

If using XP, double click on the tool, then double click on sysinfo.

Allow this past your virus program and post the information back here.

  • Yes, following you instructions, always ran /R151379/setup.exe in vista SP2 compatability mode.

    Thanks,

  • IndyBB,

You mention different systems, are you printer sharing on a host computer?

After you right clicked on R151379, left clicked on, properties, compatibility mode, vista SP2, then clicked ok.

You right clicked on the R151379, then left clicked run as administrator

Did the file unzip and just sit there?

If yes, then look for the setup file. Left click on, properties, compatibility mode, vista SP2, then click ok.

Right click on the setup file, then left click run as administrator.

I suggest running delete print jobs in case the test print job is stuck in the queue. If it's not there, then it may not be necessary. A stuck print job will allow yhou to go through the uninstall/reinstall steps but the same problem will still be there.

Disconnect the printer from the computer.

    Run the patch.

Restart the computer. Make sure the printer was removed.

    Start, control panel, device manager.

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Starting at the bottom, USB Root Hubs, and working your way to the top, USB Universal Controllers, un-install everything in that section.

Restart your computer. Windows will find everything again and correct the problem one. Please be patient. The new hardware wizard may work 3-5 minutes before it's done.

Now install the Vista 64-bit drivers in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode.

    What happens?

  • Hello Rick,

You mention different systems, are you printer sharing on a host computer?   No. Right now I would be thrilled to get it printing from direct pc to printer USB. That is all I am working on. I mentioned I have another Win7 64 bit laptop that works just fine with this 922 AIO printer (on direct usb connection).

After you right clicked on R151379, left clicked on, properties, compatibility mode, vista SP2, then clicked ok.

You right clicked on the R151379, then left clicked run as administrator

Did the file unzip and just sit there?  Yes

If yes, then look for the setup file. Left click on, properties, compatibility mode, vista SP2, then click ok.

Right click on the setup file, then left click run as administrator.  Yes. Did that. Each time.

I suggest running delete print jobs in case the test print job is stuck in the queue. If it's not there, then it may not be necessary. A stuck print job will allow yhou to go through the uninstall/reinstall steps but the same problem will still be there.

Yes. You have included that advice before and I did it.

    Done

Now install the Vista 64-bit drivers in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode.  Done

What happens?  I go to Devices and Printers, right click printing properties, and click print test page. A window pops up to say a test page has been sent to the printer. Then another window pops up Heading: Dell Photo AIO Printer 922  -- Communication Not Available. ...The printer cannot communicate with the computer.   Please turn on "enable Bidirectional Communication" setting ...

But this setting is greyed out.

  • IndyBB,

Try these (drivers removed) in the Vista SP2 compatibility mode.

  • Rick,

Well that was interesting - downloads.dell.com/.../R151381.exe link above is the Japanese Vista 64 driver for 922 AIO. Ok, what the heck, I tried it - no dice - it threw up an error, but gave the same end result. Same lack of communications message when trying to print a test page as all previous attempts.

I'm a stuborn man, but I would have admitted defeat by now if I did'nt have another win7 64 machine that prints just fine, with all features. Dell is still happily selling print cartridges for the 922 machines. I know cause I just bought a bunch. too bad they dont want to tweak a driver for windows 7 to save us all this BS.

Thanks again for your help. You provide a great service to the community. This one has some undiagnosed glich somewhere that's iluding detection.

  • IndyBB,

The only time a printer did not install...

bad 4ft or smaller usb cable.

    problem with a usb port.

Malware on system and/or some corrupt file. If this was a new system, wonder if the system had an unnoticed issue and restoring it back to factory would help.
