I have a Dell 946. I originally had a problem with the ink (which still is unresolved), but most importantly, now my printer is not recognized by the computer. Here is what I have done:
1. Disconnected printer
2. Uninstalled the printer completely using patch R166247 (Dell Cleanup Utility)
3. Started the setup.exe from the appropriate downloaded software.
4. I got to the part where it says to plug the USB cable in....this is where the problem starts.
5. I plug the cable in. My computer recognizes new hardware (AIO 946), but then says that a problem occured installing the printer. Then, the Dell software install never enables the "next" button to move on. It doesn't recognize that the USB cable is plugged in. Therefore, I can't continue the installation.
So, I am wondering if the USB cable is bad. But then, I don't understand how my computer recognizes the printer. Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated. I am running Windows XP (32 bit).
Make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.
Disconnect your printer.
Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch(a MUST on Vista computers) until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Restart your computer.
Download the proper drivers.
Vista 32-bit Drivers
XP & Vista 64-bit Drivers.
All other drivers
Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on).
As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Can you make a copy of something when you put it under the glass? We need to have the printer working as a copier before the printer will install.
If not, then unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds. Thgis will reset any error messages the printer is getting. Now plug everything back in and power on the printer.
Open the printer and take out the Dell Series 5 ink cartridge. Make sure the cartrisge has all the tape off of it, then reseat the black cartridge. Now do the same for the Color Dell Series 5 cartridge. Close the printer and it should print an alignment page. Any error messages?
Dell Series 5 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges .
Dell Series 5 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.
No, I am not able to copy.
I did the steps you listed...but I still am receiving an error message "Right Cartridge Incorrect". I'm pretty sure the color cartridge is the correct one for the printer (5 series, P/N J5567). I just purchased it at Staples. This is the second one I purchased and I received the same message. I guess maybe this is what is causing the problem....
Any other suggestions?
Doing a Google search for your part number J5567, it comes back as refill kit and since Dell Series 5 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset, this is just a part of the problem. After you get a Dell Series 5 ink cartridge, and the printer can copy, then we can proceed to install the printer.
Black Cartridge = black side(left side) Color cartridge = color side(right side)
Photo cartridge = black side(left side) Color cartridge = color side(right side)
I purchased a new cartridge from WalMart this time. Now I am able to copy and print a test page. However, when I try to install the printer software, it still will not let me procede because it says that the USB cable needs to be plugged in. I have the USB plugged in adn the computer recognized that I plugged it in...but it (Windows) said that there was an error installing the hardware. So....if you have any ideas what I should try next I would appreciate it :-)
Thanks so much!
Thanks so much! That worked!
GREAT JOB! Thanks for posting back. Just remember to use Dell ink cartridges and please don't let Windows Updates, update any of your drivers. Microsoft either offers the wrong drivers and/or the drivers get installed wrong causing many devices to fail, even printers.
