Dell V505W Not connecting to network

This question is not answered

This printer has both a physical and wireless adapter.  I recently modified the IP address of the wired interface (wifi is disabled because I could never get it to connect consistently).  Upon doing so, I lost connectivity and have not been able to re-establish.  I have checked all my routers settings according to http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-internet-wireless/w/networking_internet_wireless/362.recommended-wireless-router-settings.aspx.  I had a DHCP reservation for the IP of the printer (192.168.0.30), but I removed the reservation.  The printer is connected via ethernet directly to my router, so I can see the MAC address and can even ping the IP.  I also cannot manage the printer via the IP in the browser (e.g. http://192.168.0.30).  However, when I try to reinstall the Dell Imaging Toolbox, it does not detect the printer and fails when I attempt to add it manually.  I've tried powering off everything for 30 seconds, to no avail.  When I attempt to go to Setup -> Network Settings, it always has the message "Network Connection in Progress...".

Is there a way to hard reset the network settings on the printer, uninstall the software/driver, and then install and have it detected?

  • pkaliszewski,

The printer is a wireless printer. If you disconnect the printer from the ethernet cable, is the printer showing that it's connected to your network?

I'm just guessing, but you want to print to the wireless printer from a desktop computer, correct?

Make and model of your computer and opertaing system. 32-bit or 64-bit?

What virus program and firewall are you using?

  • Hey Rick

Thanks for the feedback!  I have disabled wireless on the printer, so if I disconnect the ethernet cable, it is not connected to the network (I can see the device table and which MAC addresses are connected via ethernet or wireless).  I don't really have a preference on printing via wireless or wired connection, I just want to print :)  I'm open to re-enabling the wifi and troubleshooting that.  I have both wired and wireless devices I want to print from, but they are all on my RFC1918 private address space.

Based on my experience with networks, I think there is a conflict with the IP I tried to set the printer to on the ethernet and what the printer thinks it's set to (I went from .3 to .30 because I use my lower IP space with wireless devices).  I have tried everything I can think of from a network perspective, and even tried to restore factory defaults on the printer, but every time I check network settings on the printer, it shows "Network Connection in Progress..."  And since I can't access the printer via browser or the dell imaging toolbox, I can't check the network settings of the device.

The MAC of the wired network card is eth1 on the router (00:20:00:56:d3:61) and I see packets sent and received.

I am using Norton 360 for both the firewall and AV, but I have disabled in multiple attempts to connect to the printer (however, I'm open to tweaking internal traffic/rules to troubleshoot).

    Thanks for your help!

  • pkaliszewski,

    I see you have a Inspiron 530 Vista SP2 32-bit system.

Make and model of your wireless router is helpful. What type of security are you using and what channel?

    I'll hope it's not a Belkin.

Try using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings I use channel 11. I would make a new SSID to make connecting easier.

When the router is setup, then...

Run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs from the queue.

Make sure the printer is not usb cable connected.

Start, control panel, programs and features, Dell V505w Printer, uninstall.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

The first installation will be new installation, choose network and follow the instructions below.

With the computer online, insert the printer disk. Choose new installation. Choose network. It will prompt you to connect the printer, using the usb cable. It will ask the SSID of your network, maybe the type of security and password. It should then prompt you to unplug the usb cable and then see if the printer is conected to your network.

Additional computers, choose aditional computer, choose network, and follow the instructions.

Your desktop is using the ethernet cable and is plugged in to the wireless router port, so when you install the drivers, choose network, find the printer and follow the instructions.

    Allow a printer past Norton

Any questions, feel free to ask. Once the printer is setup, you can give the printer a static ip address using the old ip address of the printer and then using the configuration page to change it.

  • Modem is a Qwest Q1000.  I already had the recommended wireless settings (see original post).  At this point, I am just trying to get it back on the network - even if it's a wired connection.  I did the dell v505w printer unistall.  I also removed all the drivers as well.

Is there a way (other than unplug the printer for 30 seconds) to reset the printer?  After I uninstall the printer (control panel and manually remove the print drivers), when I get to the point to plug in the USB cable, the device cannot be detected (I tried two separate computers)...  The printer can't seem to be detected via USB or wired network connection, and wireless is off....  With the wired network connection, I can still ping the device from the router and even peers on the network, but cannot seem to access it remotely via http...

    Ideas?

  • pkaliszewski,

A stuck print job in the queue will let you go through the motions of uninstalling and reinstalling the printer but the problem will still remain.

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs from the queue.

Make sure the printer is not usb cable connected.

Start, control panel, programs and features, Dell V515w Printer, uninstall.

Restart the computer. Make sure the printer was removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

With the computer online, insert the printer disk and choose new installation, choose network and follow the instructions. It will prompt you when to connect the printer. The ask for the network name and ppassword.

Remember virus programs and firewalls will block communications.

  • I ran the delete print jobs command, deleted everything in the Printers directory, unistalled the printer, disconnected the USB cable, removed the print drivers, unistalled the dell imaging toolbox, rebooted, and attempted to reinstall.

When I get to the screen to select how to install (network, wireless, usb), I cannot get any of these options to work.

Wired: I can ping the printer (192.168.0.30).  I have tried to find it, manually added it, powered it off for 60 seconds, and it won't install it

Wireless and USB:  Wireless is off (the wireless light on the printer is not illuminated), and when I attempt to connect the printer via the USB cable, windows doesn't recognize the USB port.  I tried manually updating the USB driver to the one on the disc, but it still won't recognize the printer over USB (I even have 2 of these cables since the last two printers I have had are dell - and neither work).  Windows tries to add a USB composite device driver and fails.

Is there a way to hard reset the printer to factory defaults with the printer LED menu?

    Other ideas?

  • pkaliszewski,

You have to disconnect the printer first, then uninstall.

What is the make and model of your wireless router and the type os security you're using? What channel?

  • Ok, I will disconnect and power off the printer and run through the steps again.

Wireless router is an Actiontec Q1000.  I am using channel 11 (per recommended settings - I've been through those as well).  Keep in mind, I turned the wireless adapter off on the printer.  The WIFI light doesn't light up since I've disabled it.  I'm not even able to access the printer via USB cable to setup wireless (I'm a network engineer - so if I can get access to the printer, I can fix the network part).

AV/FW is Norton 360, but I turn both the firewall and online protection off before I install.

  • pkaliszewski,

Try Turning the wireless adapter on/off in the Dell V715w Printer

Run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs from the queue.

Make sure the printer is not usb cable connected.

Start, control panel, programs and features, Dell V715w Printer, uninstall

Restart the computer. Make sure the printer was removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

You're uning these Recommended Wireless Router Settings I use channel 11. I would make a new SSID to make connecting easier.

Once the network is corrected, the with the computer online, insert the Dell V715w Printer disk, choose new installation, network and follow the instructions. It will ask for your network and password. When you remove the usb cable, the wifi light should turn green.

  • I can't turn the wireless adapter on/off.  I honestly think this is the overall problem.  When I go to setup -> network setup, I get the "Network connection in progress..." message.  It displays this message no matter what I unplug (usb, phone, network cable).  This is why I am looking for a way to reset ALL settings to factory default on the printer.  If I can get into the network setup menu in the printer, I believe I can fix this.

  • pkaliszewski,

If you have the usb cable connection and know the ip address of the printer, you can get to the network settings.

You could also try unplugging the printer from the wall. Then remove the power brick for 60 seconds. This will reset any error messages the printer is getting. Not sure if it will reset to factory.

    Try Setup Mode

Remove and reinstall the network adapter
    1. Turn off the printer, and unplug the power cable from the electrical outlet.

    2. Grasp the adapter by the side tabs—not the antenna—and pull to remove it. For more information, see Removing and Reinstalling the Adapter.

    3. Reinstall the adapter following the installation instructions. For more information, see Installing the Dell Internal Network Adapter 1150.

  • I do have a USB cable, but since I started having these issues, any time I plug the USB cable into a computer (I've tried 3, all on the same network as the printer, running vista and windows 7), it doesn't recognize the device.  I tried reinstalling the device driver for the USB, but that doesn't work.

I can't get into setup mode.  I did unplug it and remove the battery pack for 5 minutes, reinstalled the network card.  When I powered the printer on, it tells me it detects a wireless network adapter and when I try to enter network setup it displays the "Network connection in progress..." message and takes me back to the setup menu after about 5 seconds.  I cannot configure any of the network settings because it won't open the network settings menu.

Should I take the network card out, power on the device and then attempt to get in network setup?

  • pkaliszewski,

The only way to setup the printer is when you're installing the drivers. The wireless adapter works best on channels 1, 6 or 11. The higher the channel the better. Mixed mode, WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security(Personal) Mixed mode. Turn off the firewall in the wireless router.

When you put in the Dell Printer disk, with the computer online, it will prompt you to connect the printer with the usb cable(powered on) It will ask for your network SSID and password. It won't connect if the network is hidden. If you want to hide the network, it may work once the printer connects. I know my daughters cell will not connect if I hide my network SSID.

  • Hey Rick,

I think I know the problem, but not sure how to fix it.  I checked my router device table tonight, and it was showing two IP's trying to connect from the printer (I keep track of MAC addresses) - 1 wireless and 1 wired.  So, I removed both IP reservations and restarted the printer (normal unplug for 60 seconds).  Before I brought it back up, I unplugged the wired connection.  The printer comes up - says it detects a wireless adapter, but the WIFI light does not come on (no orange or blue - no light at all).  However, I see one open connection from the wireless adapter on my router.  When I attempt to connect the USB cable to attempt to manage the printer and reconfigure the wireless adapter, I get "USB Device Not Recognized", and the install won't allow me to manage the printer (it doesn't detect anything on the USB).  At one point, I moved my router security from WEP to "WPA - WPA2-Personal", but I had some trouble with a couple devices, so I moved it back to WEP.

So, I went back into my router, and here's what I have set currently:

    Security: WPA-Personal, TKIP

    Channel: 11

    802.11 mode: b, g, or n

    SSID: broadcast enable

    Mac authentication: off

    WPS: off

After modifying the router settings, with the wired connection still unplugged, I powered cycled the printer.  I had the same results...  The printer comes up, the LCD says it found a wireless adapter, and when I go to setup -> network settings, it says "Network connection in progress..."  And I am still getting the "USB Device Not Recognized" error when I plug the USB cable in.

Maybe I am focusing on the network issue and should be focused on the USB issue.  If I could connect to the printer via USB, I could fix this.  Any idea how to resolve the "USB Device Not Recognized" error in Vista?

And, I have to express my thanks.  You have been super helpful and persistent.  Thanks for your patience, time and help!

  • pkaliszewski,

The adapter not showing a light tells me the adapter is turned off at the printer. I have only a Dell V715w Printer and here are the instructions I have to turn the adapter on/off. It has to be in the setup menu, somewhere. Turning the wireless adapter on/off in the Dell V715w Printer

Did you turn off the firewall in the router?

If you made these changes to your network, did you make a new SSID?

The printer needs to be connected with the usb cable during installation to tell the printer your SSID and password. If you did not make a new SSID, then when you insert the Dell Printer disk with the computer online, find the neighbors network, tell it that is your network and just type in some characters for a password. You'll get a communications failure, then sleect your network and type the correct password. It should connect this time.

With WPS off, you cannot use the WPS setup method. Unless you turn it on, use the WPS setup method. This was turned off for some of the wireless adapters that were having trouble connecting.

Look at THIS PAGE and see if something is there that may have been missed.

Your virus program and firewall will also block communications but because the printers adapter is not green or orange, it's telling me the adapter is turned off or maybe not seated properly. Probably a setting on the printer.
