Please follow the instructions below and then tell me what happens.
First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially.net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.
Download and run this patch(***WARNING*** The patch for this printer alsoo removes other Dell applications, like Dell Dock, Dell QuickSet and other Dell applications)(These applications can be downloaded at Drivers & Downloads and can be reinstalled) to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch(A MUST on Vista Machines) until it prompts you to restart your computer.
If using Windows 7 also try...Manual Printer Driver Removal
Restart your computer.
Download the proper drivers.
Vista 32-bit Drivers
All other drivers
Vista 64-bit Drivers
Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)
***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***
If using Windows 7, use the Vista drivers in the compatibility mode.
Right click on the setup.exe file, left click properties, left click compatibility. Change the compatibility to Vista(Try Vista SP2). Then install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect the printer(powered on)
As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.
Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.
Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

Disconnect the printer,
Start, control panel, programs and features, Dell 964 printer, uninstall
Restart your computer. Make sure the printer was removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
Then install the R146813.exe drivers in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode
Remember virus programs and firewalls will block communications.
thanks for your prompt reply: I followed your procedure and this happened:
1) I run the DeletePrintJobs.cmd to remove any stuck print jobs from the queue (but I hadn't seen any)
2) Disconnect the printer,
3) Start, control panel, programs and features, Dell 964 printer, uninstall - was successful
4) Restarted my computer
5) Checked in Start, control panel, programs and features: no Dell printer
6) Checked in Start, control panel, printers and devices: no Dell printer ison
7) Run R146813.exe drivers in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode - did run "successfully"
8) Start, control panel, printers and devices: Printer icon present - but double clicking shows only scanning properties, not printing option; also if I open word and try to print, the 964 is not shown as printer

Did you upgrade to Windows 7 64-bit? If yes, did you install the drivers in the correct order? How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order
What virus program and firewall are you using?
Operating system in E nglish or another language?
No, I did not update to Win7 but purchased a new XPS8500 with Win7 pre-installed on the HD. I cloned the HD onto an SSD and the SSD is now my drive c:\ from which Win 7 is started and where all programs are located.
Only after cloning and using the SSD as "program drive" I tried to install the driver for the 964. I did extract the r146813.exe to the folder c:\dell\drivers\r146813 and run the setup.exe from there.
I live in Switzerland and the operating system is in German language.
I use Avira Free Antivirus.
Disconnect the printer.
Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Download the Vista 64-bit drivers. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode You may or may not get a message to connect the printer.
Hit the Windows key and the R keys at the same time. Type...
C:\Program Files\Dell 964\Drivers
You should see an English folder there. Right click, new, create folder. Name the new folder German. Copy all the files in the English folder and paste them to the German folder.
Double click on the Vista 64-bit drivers and install again. There should be a message, then printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on.

12) Disconnect printer
13) Run R146813.exe drivers in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode - connected printer upon prompt, had to connect to a different USB - then "installation" was running. When the program asks for "connect the printer" there is a bottom "next" which never becomes active. When I plug in the printer, it looks like a WindowsUpdater (?) is taking over the installation. Is this the way it should be?
14) Final result: printing does not work, scanning options are there.
Did I do anything wrong?
I also wonder why there is also a 964 folder under:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell Photo AIO Printer 964\ with an Install folder with subfolder COMMON and X64. This contains the uninstall.exe which is running when I deinstall the printer via "Deinstall programs"
Hope you can find what I am doing wrong - or what is going wrong.

found some other ENGLISH folders:
In the R146813 folder into which I extracted the r146813.exe
would they be needed?
When you bouble clicked on R146813.exe, it probably unzipped and sat there.
Then copy the files from the English folder and paste them to the German folder. Then click on the setup.exe file in the R146813 folder
Try reading this thread, it's for another model of printer, but it uses the same basics and foold the computer to think you have German drivers, but works in English.

I've just upgraded my computer to windows 8 and I owned a AIO Printer 964. When I right-click the printers icon, it does not say "set as printer" and it reads "driver not available". I can't print it out of my computer.

Ty, Vista 64 bit driver for dell 964 printer worked in Windows 8 64bit
I found your post and several others on this topic and your solutions worked for me. I have a Dell Latitude E4300 Win 7 and wasn't able to find the AIO Center for my 964 printer. I ran the patch, made sure the printer drivers were gone and that no print jobs were in the queue. Installed the Vista32 driver for the 964 and the firmware that's recommended. Looks like I'm back in business. I've had mixed results in other forums, but your solutions were spot on and clearly described - and still valid 4 years later! Thanks a bunch!
