Recommended Wireless Router Settings

Networking, Internet, Wireless Wiki

I highly recommend using these settings in your wireless router to get everything to communicate with very minimal problems.

Update the firmware in your wireless router. Manufacturer's website, make & Model needed.

Broadcast SSID(You may want to change this to make it easier to connect)

Use WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security(WPA Personal). Most wireless devices work best with this type of security.

Password at least 13 characters long.

Mixed b and g mode(n if available)(Use this mode only if using a print server and/or USB wireless adaptrer(s))

Use channels 1, 6 or 11. Most devices work better on these channels.

Keep the setting at DHCP.

Do NOT use Mac Address Filtering

Please turn off the firewall in the wireless router.

Some adapters do not like WPS and may need to be turned off.

Save and exit. Power everything off for 30 seconds. Power everything back on, wait 30 seconds, now try to connect.

If you have any questions, please post them at Networking, Internet, Wireless Forum

Please remember that WEP can be hacked in ten minutes or less.

  • Hi

My router has modes "Auto108Mbps" or "g and b".

Currently it is Auto108Mbps, all other setting are as per recommended:

    Channel: 6

    Securiy: WPA-PSK[TKIP]

Should I change the mode to g and b ??

  • Thank you the WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security change seemed to fix the problem with internet connection drops.

  •
My ISP changed my settings to WEP 128bit and when I queried it said that they have changed it for security!!!

  • I was able to get into the settings for my router, but all of the settings were already consistent with your recommendations. By the way, I started having problems this week when I was out of town on a business trip. I tried logging into the hotel's network but was not able to (same problem I am now having at home, too). The problem is not on the router end. It is definitely a problem on the connection end. I used to be able to see all of the wireless connections around me. Now I see nothing.

  • My question is about this posting. I have a desktop, connected to a router and Rogers cable modem. I want to buy another Dell desktop to use in the other room. Should I go with a wireless desktop, or can I connected the new pc to the router by wire? which Dell model desktops include wireless system?
