Problem with Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n

Hi All!

I have a problem with Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n in my Dell 17R Inspiron 5720. Speed of my wifi connection changing from 5.5Mb/s to 54Mb/s all the time. 

I`m using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 OS. Problem is with wifi card Broadcom 4356, another laptop (HP) has stable speed 150Mb/s. I tried different options of card driver and router D-Link DIR-320NRU,  but nothing have changed.

  Is anyone can help me, please??

    There are few steps I would like to suggest.
    1. Check the distance between the router and the laptop.
    If it is more than 30 feet, the distance can be the cause of the issue.

    2. Try connecting to a different network.
    If the connection on a different network if fine, the problem might be with the router or the network.

    3. Updating the Wireless Drivers.
    -- Click start.
    -- Open Control Panel.
    -- Open Device Manager.
    -- Choose Network Adapters.
    -- Uninstall the wireless adapter.
    -- Restart the computer.
    -- Download and Install the wireless drivers from the link mentioned below.

    Choose the wireless adapter from the list and install it.
    Restart the computer and check the functionality.

    I would also recommend updating the BIOS to the latest version. Check the BIOS version on your computer (Start -> Run -> type “msinfo32” press Enter).

  • I have the same problem. I have done what you have suggested but I am still only getting 72mbps. I have a dell studio 17 that i bought in 2009 that gets the 150mbps no problem.

  • I also got a Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n issue , it connects to the wifi router just for 2 or 3 seconds then disconnects automatically.

    I have a similar problem with  Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n in my new Inspiron 5720 (ST: JB9TCT1 + Windows 7 Prof. 64-bit).

    With the drivers version WLAN_6.20.55.49 the connection is impossible.

    I have try with WLAN:6.20.55.51 - connection is possible (with effort) but only whit speed of 1.0 Mbps!

    Please help!

    Thank you for your answer. I have tried everything you suggested, but I still have the problem. All drivers are originally downloaded from dell.com  

    Vendor Version : WLAN_6.20.55.49/BT_6.5.1.1785

    Dell Version : A01

    I think the problem is in the driver or in the Broadcom card. If I have another driver, I'll know what the problem is for sure.

  • Hello,

    I would suggest forcing a network adapter to 10 Mbps Half Duplex.  Forcing a network adapter to a Half Duplex can improve the communication between the router and the computer it is connected to.

    The problem concerns for the Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n! I have no problem with the LAN adapter.

    My Inspiron 5720 has a problem with the vifi connection.

      Just picked up a Vostro. It has the same Dell 1704 b/g/n 2.4Ghz card. It seems to be a lemon. Wont connect at more than 26Mbps and im sitting right besides the router. My Sony Vaio, and Toshiba connect fine. This is a work laptop and im running out of patience. If i move away from the router, the connection jut drops.. and My other laptops and my iphone and Samsung and Blackberry connect fine... Gonna try to see if there is any Bios/Driver update.. Else gonna have to send this back or ask to change the wifi card.

  • Also got this problem with the Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz) card in my new laptop. I've disabled the power saving settings for the card but it still drops allot. I saw allot of other stuff in the advanced tab of the netwok card but dont know if there is a setting that could help. Anyway I hope there will be better drivers for this card. I hate stripping the card and replace it. Btw Old laptop on the same place worked fine. So its the settings or the card it self. Tried playing with the wifi channels but didnt help.

  • none of this resolves the issue. I have three other laptops in the home used for personal and business applications. The other three laptops connect at 300Mbps without issue. I cannot connect faster then 56Mbps on this Dell 5720. I try to transfer a file wireless via my server to this laptop and if I am lucky the fasts I get is about 2Mbps transfer rate.

    I have a second router in the home that is 150Mbps. This laptop will say it connects at 130Mbps and only sustains that speed per Task Manager for 1-2 seconds then back to 54Mbps.

     

    Dell, Please resolve this issue. I need a functional laptop, not another paperweight.

    Go to Drivers & Downloads enter your service tag number, then select your operating system. Under Network, download and install the latest drivers.

    Start, control panel, device manager. Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

     

    Go to the power options, and changed the Wireless Adapter Setting, from Maximum Power Setting to Maximum Performance.

    Thanks and I did as suggested. My MAX speed is still 54Mbps per the task manager.

    Welcome to Dell I guess. Is there another mini PCI-E Dell is willing to ship to me to test?

    Start, control panel, device manager, network, double click on Dell™ Wireless 1704 WLAN Half Mini-Card, click on advanced. Look for antenna diversity. Change it from Auto to Aux.

     

    This adapter works only on 2.4GHz if you use WPA-AES, you may get some extra speed, but some wireless devices may not support WPA-AES.

  • I do not have Dell Wireless 1704 as a listed device.

    Mine is the Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230

    My laptop is an Inspiron 5720
