OS: Windows Vista Business(32-bit) SP1


Issue: Unable to print form certain applications to a standalone network printer


When you try to print from IE,Notepad and WordPad, you will get the print setup page(from which you can change your preferences), only when you select the right printer from the list available you will be able to print, Whereas when you try to print from Excel or a pdf document, you receive an error “Before you can perform print-related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you need to install a printer”


Cause: The printer which is being used is not set as default


Symptoms: When you try to set a printer as default, nothing happens.I.e you will not have a check mark on any of the printers that are installed


Fix/Workaround: Open “Regedit” > “HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\Device” > Make sure that the value of “Device”  key is in the format “ipaddress of printer,printername, winspool, port name” (Eg: \\\Brother MFC460WC Printer,winspool,Ne00:)
