How Can I Turn On My Webcam?

i want to know how to turn on my dell inspiron 3520 built in webcam and does it have a built in microphone?and i curious can someone spying you without you knowing and the light on? i do research on google, and somebody tell that can be happen,is that true?what the color of my webcam light?

  • Hi Carmen95,

    If you system was shipped Windows 8, you can access the 'Camera' app from the start screen. In case you are not able to see the 'Camera' app on the start screen, you can download it from 'Windows Store Apps'.

    • From the Start screen, click the 'Camera' tile to open the app
    • If the app asks to use your camera and microphone, choose 'Allow'
    • Adjust the settings, if desired
    • To snap a photo, click anywhere on the screen
    • The camera app saves all your snapped photos and videos in a folder called 'Camera Roll' in your Pictures library

    If you system came with Windows 7, you can click on the Start menu -> Type Dell Webcam Central to access the webcam application. This system is shipped with a microphone.

  • my computer is running windows 8,there indeed have a camera app,but i not be able to use it,the app show an error massage 'this app needs permission to use your camera,you can change this in the app's settings' where is the app setting and how to enable webcam?

    Thank you for the response. To provide permission to the Camera app, open the Camera app -> then click Settings on the charm bar -> click Permissions -> change the permission to On. You may watch the video for more information.

  • thank bro,but i have a problem doesn't matter with my webcam,can you answer me if you don't mind?something wired happen to my windows media player,it will stop for a sec while i open new website in internet,i usually left it playing video to listen music and keep on repeat the same video,is repeat video cause problem?

    Thank you for the response. It could happen due to many possible reasons; would like more clarity on the issue. Please share the following details.

    *May I know the browser you are using? Try opening the website with an alternate browser to see if that helps.
    *Do you face this issue only with Windows Media Player? Try using a different media player (if available) and share the results.
    *Does the issue duplicate itself with any other applications (when started)?

  • i usually use Mozilla Firefox,but i have Google chrome,IE,comodo gradon installed,i try to using another web browser but still remain the same problem.i wish to have another media player but i didn't,and forget to mention there appear a popping sound when i open a new tab while using internet.thank you for helping.

    I would like to suggest few steps which might help us in fixing the issue. Please try the following steps:

    1. Check if the Webcam is detected in Device Manager. Open the Start Menu, type “device manager” in the search box and press <Enter>. Expand the tab for Imaging Devices and check if the webcam is detected. 
    2. Run the Dell PC Diagnostics for Webcam. This would check the functionality of the webcam.
    3. The system comes installed with the Dell Webcam Central software suite. Uninstalling and re-installing of the software can be tried. Please follow the article to Uninstall and Re-install the Webcam Central Software.

    Please try the steps and write back with results, would be glad to assist further.

  • I have the same problem (mine is a Dell Inspiron N5110 with Windows 7).


    After using it for almost a year, the built-in webcam is now no longer detected, and it does not appear in the list in Device Manager.


    I have tried running Dell Diagnostics for 'Camera' and it came up with the following message:

    "A diagnostic category was specified and the applicable device does not exist."

    What has happened to my webcam?!?

  • Hi Dominic,

    Since the webcam is not detected in Device manager, try uninstalling the USB root hubs in Device manager and check if it makes any difference. To uninstall USB Root Hubs:

    • Expand ‘Universal Serial Bus controllers’
    • From the list, look for ‘USB Root Hub’
    • Right click, choose ‘Uninstall’, choose ‘Ok’
    • Uninstall all ‘USB Root Hub’ listed
    • Wait for all the drivers to get uninstalled
    • Restarted the computer
    • Restarting the computer will install ‘USB Root Hub’s automatically on the computer
    • Check the functionality of the webcam

    Alternatively, you may press the area near webcam and see if it makes any difference. This is to check If there is an issue with loose webcam cable.

    Please share the findings.

  • Tried this and it had no effect.


    Also tried pressing the area around the webcam, to no avail. Could it really be a case of loose wiring? If so, might it be worth getting a techy to open it up and have a look inside?

    I also tried opening 'Scanners and Cameras' and clicking 'Add device', then selecting one, then the other, of the two Creative Live! Cameras from the list displayed. Now when I go to Device manager, there appear two 'Unknown devices' under 'Image devices'. I have tried updating the drivers, but in Dell Webcam Central it still says 'No compatible device connected' (or words to that effect). Is either of these my built-in webcam? I can't understand how it can simply vanish! (Perhaps I should point out that the problem started after troubleshooting an issue with my music recording software, ProTools, whereby I was directed to change certain settings in the boot and BIOS setup. Might I have deactivated the webcam in the boot settings? If so, can you remind me how to get into the boot setup to correct this?

  • Hi Dominic,

    This seems to be issue with the webcam and may have to be replaced. Yes, it is also a good idea to get the cable checked by a local technician. 

    Though, BIOS does not play any role in functionality of the webcam, you may still try to reset it to default settings.

    • Power off the computer
    • Restart the computer, tap ‘F2’ key on the Dell logo
    • This will take you to the BIOS screen
    • Try to reset BIOS to defaults.
    • Press ‘F9’ key once, highlight ‘Yes’, press ‘Enter’
    • Press ‘F10’ key once, highlight ‘Yes’, press ‘Enter’
    • Restart the computer and check the functionality.
