Dell Docking Station PD01X and PCI graphic card

This question is not answered

Hello:

I own a Dell D400 with a docking station PD01X (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Docking_Station/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=310-2873). I plan to buy a PCI graphic card and plug it inside the docking station PCI slot. I searched a bit on Internet and I found two possible problems. 1) The PCI slot is a half size slot. However, this should not be a problem for a low profile card. I checked the dimensions, and it fits. 2) My main concern is the power supply that comes with this docking station. It has an output of 130W with 19V and 6.6A (more or less), and the power supply for the D400 (PA-12) has 65W with 19V and 3.3A. I found these cards:

- geforce 6200 (http://www.sparkle.com.tw/product_detail.asp?id=15&sub_id=16)

- geforce 5200 (http://cgi.ebay.es/Jaton-PCI-Video-Card-VIDEO-228PCI-TWIN-FX-5200-Dual-REF_W0QQitemZ270285499319QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCC_Video_TV_Cards?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116)

- radeon 9200 (http://cgi.ebay.es/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:VRI&item=200279077548)

But, I am not sure if they will work with the docking station power supply. So, the question is:

Could anyone give some advice? Which is the newest PCI graphic card that will work inside the docking station? Any ideas? Or experiences? (PCI graphic cards tested, working or not)

                        Thanks in advance:

  • Hello,

I finally bought a Geforce FX5500 with 256MB, but I can not use it. The BIOS is set to use docking video card.

If the laptop is plugged in the docking station and a CRT monitor (that works on another machine) connected to the VGA port in the FX5500, then Windows XP boots (I can hear the "welcome music", Trillian ready sound, and hard drive working), but the screen is black. I shutdown the computer by pressing the shutdown button and leave the machine to shutdown normally.

When the laptop is unplugged and it boots again, everything is fine and it uses the built-in video card. At the end of the booting process, Windows says that the resolution is not the optimal and I should let him change it (so, the FX5500 was detected and used). If the laptop is hot plugged, the FX5500 is detected by the hardware administrator, but I can not use it. Because, the current video card is the built-in one.

I installed the NVidia drivers. I shutdown, unplug, reboot, and plug it, and the hardware administrator still show the ! symbol and I can not find a way to tell Windows to use the FX5500.

    Could anyone help me, please?

                                  Regards:
