Screen goes black moments after start up

  • It's a dell insprion 8600 laptop.

I'll turn it on and about 30 seconds after the screen comes on it goes black again. At first I thought that something was broken with the screen itself, but then while toying with it I realized the extra strange thing.

If I put the laptop to sleep by closing it, when I re-open it the screen will come back on for another 20 seconds or so before going black. I can repeat this multiple times, but the screen never stays on for more than 20 seconds.

It's almost as if the screen isn't getting the command to stay lit...

Any ideas on what could be wrong, or what kind of place I should take it to in order to get it fixed?
  • mine did this about 2 weeks ago. finally got someone and they told me i needed to wipe out my hard drive and reinstall everything. i did as was told and found out that i did not have the disk to reinstall all the drivers. got most of them up and running but its still not right. check in your cds that came with your puter and tell me if you have yours please. mine was missing.

You can download all the drivers for your system right here on the Dell website.  Click on the link below, select your model and OS and download away.

  • thats what i did driver r58028 says it can not find any compatible hardware
  • On the power bar, next to the three led lights, you will see a little plunger. This is the plunger that sends the screen into hiberation when you close the lid. These have a habit of with sticking on the 8500/8600 machines. A new power bar is cheap and easy to pop into place if that is the problem.

I have the same problem with the same model (Inspiron 8600) that Aesir315 describes in the above posting. And since I would rather not consult with Dell's customer service another time nor send my computer in to them, which is what they are asking, I thought that someone with the same issue might be aware of a solution. At any rate, about 1 week ago, my computer’s LCD started occasionally flickering on and off, and then started to completely black out every time I attempted to turn it on. At first, I could see the screen for 10-15 seconds, but now I cannot see anything at all. Perhaps, someone knows what I should do to get this resolved. Since I have read quite a few other posts regarding similar issues, I assume someone must have been able to fix their system by now. If so, I would really appreciate it if you could let me know what steps were taken to do so.

    Thank You

PS  I did go through multiple steps with Dell's customer support.  I already tried...

    1. Repetitively pressing F8 to put the system into 'safe mode' and then remove the display.  Etc, Etc…

    2. Removing the hard drive and putting it back in. Including whatever steps before and after as well.

    3. Taking out the battery, unplugging the AC adapter from the computer as well as the power outlet, plugging the AC adapter back into the computer and outlet, then turning the computer back on, etc.

  • Dupas,

I have the exact same problem with my 8500.  It started with the screen getting fuzzy and then it would be okay.  I turned it on the other day and started to play a game and the screen froze.  I powered it off via the power button and turned it back on.  Nothing.  It seems to be dead.  Tried an external monitor still nothing.  It will not even boot up now.

I hope someone has an answer to this issue.
