Laptop overheats and shuts off

This question is not answered

My laptop keeps overheating and shutting off.  this happened to me before so I sent it in, along with another problem I had with my laptop. I am taking online classes so I cannot be separated from my laptop for more than couple of days like last time. How do I fix this myself?

  • Hi bubbles87,

Follow the below mentioned steps to troubleshoot the issue:

Check the functionality of the system in Safe Mode with Networking.

    1. Restart the computer.
    2. Keep tapping F8 on the Dell Logo Screen.
    3. Once the computer enters Advanced Boot Option, select Safe Mode with Networking.
    4. Press Enter.

Check if the computer is doing the same thing in safe mode with networking.

If the laptop fans are not spinning then use this link for troubleshooting the fans and air vents: http://dell.to/19Ojc8K

I would suggest loading BIOS to default.

    1. Switch on the computer and tap F2 key to enter the BIOS.
    2. Once in BIOS, press F9 to load BIOS defaults.
    3. Press F10 to save and exit the BIOS.

Check if the system is shutting down. If the laptop is not shutting down, I suggest you to update the BIOS to the latest version and check. To update the BIOS follow the below mentioned steps:

    1. Visit the following website: http://dell.to/17F08dH
    2. Enter the Service tag of the computer in the box provided and click “Submit”.
    3. In the next page, click drop down arrow to select the Operating System which is installed in the computer.
    4. Under category BIOS, click “Get driver” and save the file on desktop.
    5. Run the file and restart the system.

Check the functionality of the system. If the issue persists, system fans and thermal heatsink needs to be replaced. If the computer is under warranty, I would be glad to arrange a service on the computer. Check warranty status: http://dell.to/13VPd97

Please private message me the service tag, registered owners name and address.

To private message me please click my user name and click start conversation.

In case of expired warranty scenario, we would not be able to extend warranty entitled services.

If the warranty on the computer has expired, below link would help you in contacting expired warranty services (this is for US based customers): http://dell.to/VPYT4T

    Awaiting your response!

    Thanks & Regards,
