XPS L502x Win8 DPC Watchdog Violation and Sleep Mode Freezing

Hello, 

When I put my laptop to sleep by closing the lid, I'm finding that when I come back to it there will be a BSOD with the message DPC Watchdog Violation showing. I've also noticed that sometimes the laptop will become frozen on going to sleep or hibernating. The only way to get it to completely shut down it by holding the power button down. 

I've updated to the latest bios and drivers on the Dell Drivers Support site and am at my wits end now. Can anyone help?

  • Hi BuddyDavis,

    It could be an issue with the software or the hardware of the computer. I would suggest you to run the diagnostics on the computer to check the hardware functionality.

    Restart the computer, press 'F12'  key on the Dell logo -> Select ‘Diagnostics’ from the boot menu -> Please refer to the link if any error code shows up http://dell.to/OUGnqT 

    Alternatively, ensure that Windows updates are update to date. You may watch the video on how to perform Windows update:

  • Thanks, I've run the diagnostics and found a series of HDD errors. Dell came to replace my HDD but I've still go this problem where if I close the lid to put the laptop into sleep mode and then come back in 10 - 15 minutes to open the lid, the laptop screen won't turn on yet the back left fan is blowing at full speed and blowing hot hot air. It's like the GPU or CPU does't always sleep and goes into a 100% utilization mode forcing the fan to try to cool it down. 

    The keyboard is completely unresponsive although some of the button lights are on and I have to push the power button for 10 seconds to shut it down and then restart the machine. I've only just reinstalled Windows 8 on the machine yesterday so I'm kind of led to think it's a hardware problem, perhaps something to do with Optimus in the nVidia graphics card? Are you aware of this issue at all?

    Thank you for the response. I would suggest you to update the BIOS and video drivers for the computer. The latest BIOS available is A12. Here is the link http://dell.to/XTAmNE

    Note: Before updating BIOS please ensure that:
    *Battery is 10%> or >10% charged
    *Battery charger should be connected
    *No external devices (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) should be connected.
    *All other programs should be closed and documents saved

    Once BIOS is updated, first download and install the Intel video driver from the link http://dell.to/16PedCi , restart the computer. Now install the driver for Nvidia from the following link http://dell.to/12LVJny .
