Vostro 3350 Battery/Power Issues

I have a vostro 3350 for about a year.

I recently encounter a serious problem when suddenly my laptop does not charge the battery anymore. It does not even use my laptop battery even in bios.

Please note that in the Windows battery indicator, it show I have 86% battery left but it's not charging. My laptop does not power on on battery but can be use only with AC. If I turn on the computer with AC and pull the adapter off, my laptop completely power off too. The battery indicator on my laptop is flashing white and orange when I power adapter in.

I also bought a new battery but the problem still there. I'm starting to think it is not because of the battery but some other things.

Please help me, any idea or fix?

  • Hi Shadow_Assassin,

    Check if the charging port is loose, sticky or broken.

    You can drain the residual power of your computer and re-calibrate the battery by following the steps below:

    • Power off your computer. 
    • Remove all the external peripherals  (printers, scanners or any other USB device) connected to your computer.
    • Please remove the AC adapter and battery of your computer. 
    • Press and hold the power button of your computer for 10-15 seconds to drain the residual power. 
    • Release the power button
    • Keep the battery out for atleast 2 - 3 hours.
    • Then insert the battery and charge it overnight with the system powered off.
    • Insert the battery in and connect the AC adaptor.
    • Then power on the computer and see if it works.

    If the issue still persists, you can check in BIOS if the AC adapter gets detected in BIOS. You can follow the steps below to check AC adapter in BIOS:

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as you see the Dell logo, start tapping the ‘F2’ key on top of the keyboard.
    • If you wait too long and the Microsoft Windows appears, then continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Now shutdown your computer and try again.
    • After this a new window would appear. You can only use the arrow keys of the keyboard to navigate between the options as the mouse is not functional in this mode.
    • Under Main tab, check if the AC adapter gets detected. 

      

    • If the AC adapter is not detected, press F9 to load defaults and F10 to save changes
    • Restart your computer.

    I've tested the above mention methods but did not work. My AC adapter is okay and I also use a new adapter to test too but the problem's still the same.

    And here my dell battery meter.

    Any other suggestion?

    Edit: it's not charging even the system is off. flashing white and orange all night.

    My apologies for delayed response. 

    It appears to be an issue with motherboard as the AC adapter gets detected in system BIOS. You have already tried a good known battery and the issue persists. 

    Reseat the battery once and then you may try updating the system BIOS: http://dell.to/TLxIbF 

    Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.

    Steps to download BIOS:

    • Click on “Download File”.
    • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
    • Click on “Download Now”.
    • Save the BIOS on your desktop.
    • Once the BIOS is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
    • Follow the prompts on screen and restart your computer.

    If it does not help, motherboard might need replacement. If the system is under warranty, you can private message me the Service Tag of computer. I have added you as a friend. Please accept my friend request by clicking on my name highlighted in blue and then click on “Friends” tab at the top and then click on “Request to Review” and finally click on “Accept” button.

    Many thanks for your replly and sorry for being late to reply as because I just come from holiday on Chinese New Year. I already on the latest BIOS software but the problem still the same.

    Tomorrow I will go to try a new battery on a local store. If the problem still persist, then it must be the mainboard like you said. I just hope that it is that I received a defected battery last time.

    Anyway, I've just add friend with you and send along with my service tag.

    You may try using a good known battery with computer and if the issue persists, motherboard might need replacement.

  • Thank you, this helped! I purchased my Dell Vostro 3350 used and it turned out that the previous owner change the AC adapter to one that had slightly less amps (3.34A instead of 4.62A). Without the correct amount of amps the battery will not charge.

    Problem Solved!
