Dell Studio 1558 Power Up Issue

This question is not answered

Hello, I have a problem I was hoping to have some insight shed upon.

I was using my GF's Laptop (Dell Studio 1558 Service Tag <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>

last night to create/update a resume, using the laptop without the power cord plugged in. When finished I shut the computer down using the shut down option on the Start Bar, left the screen opened and went to bed.

I got up this AM and went to Email the Resume to my work email however when I pushed the Circular Power On Button, nothing happened, I don't think any "Beeps" occurred, nor did the Power Button Light Up.

So I figured the Battery was dead/drained and I went to plug in the Charger. The Charger LED Light on the Charger Brick lights up a bright Green and stays lit, however the little LED Light on the Laptop above the Charger Plug In Port only flashes once when I plug it in or remove the power/charger cord? Isn't this light suppose to stay lit to indicate it's charging? I also think I can see a faint, miniscule light just above the circular power on button, the light isn't coming from the power button itself, but seems to be coming from the plastic casing that surrounds the power on button?

I tried unplugging the Power Cord, Shutting the Laptop screen to the closed position, removing the battery and holding the Power On Button for 30 Seconds, nothing occurred, no beeps, no LED lights, nothing. I then reconnected the Battery, the Charger and proceeded to open the Laptop and try to power it on, with nothing occurring other than the Charger Brick LED being lit bright green (Same as before), LED light on/above power cord port flashing once when plugging it in/removing it, but still no ability to turn the Laptop on?

I desperately need to get this Laptop on so I can retrieve my updated email, could you provide any insight?

Thank you for your reply.

  • Hi ktm300exc,

    Welcome to the Dell Community.

We are sorry for the inconvinence caused. Once the charger is connected to the laptop request you to check if you can see the light on the charger. Also we can try disconnecting both charger and battery from the system and hold on to the power button for 20seconds and then connect the battery, remove all external peripherals like USB key, printer, network cable etc and try starting the system. Also request you to use a known good charger on the system to see if it works on the other charger

    This should fix the issue

Let us know the progress and if you have any other questions

    Thanks & Regards

  • As I mentioned in my initial post, I did disconnect the battery, the charger and tried holding the power button in the on position with no affect. Then tried to reconnect the Battery and Charger still with no affect. Additionally, as mentioned in my initial post The Charger does appear to be functional as evidence by the green LED light on the Charger "Brick" being a bright Lit Green. Also there are no peripherals attached to the computer.

My question is this, if the charger is plugged into the computer, shouldn't the LED indicator light on the Laptop above the connection port for the charger plug stay lit to indicate its charging? As it is now, it only lights up for a fraction of a second when plugging the charger into the computer and disconnecting the charger from the computer. To clarify when I mention the LED light I am reffering to the one that is actually on the computer, not the LED light on the Charging unit itself, that one is functioniong correctly.

    Thank you.

  • Hi ktm300exc,

It seems to be an issue with the motherboard as the charging indicator is flashing instead of being stable. Request you to try starting the system only with ac adapter connected without battery and only with battery without ac adapter. Also i have sent you a friend request. Please accept the request and provide the service tag of the system and the name of the person who purchased it in a private message so that we can check the details of the system and proceed further

Let us know if you have any other queries

    Thanks & Regards

  • I am not at the Laptop now so I cannot give you the service tag. I am the one who purchased it though....Ryan M. Johnson.

  •  KTM300EXC, were you ever able to resolve this problem? I have a dell studio 1558 and it is showing the exact same symptoms.
