Keyboard keys not working (Dell Inspiron)

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7 and a majority of the top keys on the keyboard aren't working; more specifically the Q-R, and the U-P keys. I've had the computer for about 2 years now. I've had a previous keyboard issue in the past where I would type a the "I" key and it would type both the "I" and "O," but this was usually fixed by just restarting my computer. 

I've tried the keyboard troubleshooting procedure, but that didn't solve anything. I'm considering buying a new keyboard for my laptop but I don't want to waste the money if it is an issue with wiring and not the keyboard itself. Does anybody have any clue on how to fix or test my issue?

    It does sound like a physical problem to me

    But the only other possibility that I can think of other than damaged keys is that your keyboard connector may have been loosened. Keyboards use a matrix to determine if a key has been pressed to they get a signal on a column and on a row. A, encoder chip interprets the signals and send out the equivalent ASCII code. If the encoder is on your motherboard board and not the keyboard module, then the cable could have been partially pulled out, disabling a column or two of keys.

    When you take the laptop apart, first thing is to re-seat the keyboard cable, and see if that fixes it.

    Try taking a look at the retainer clip under the key, or the rubber center piece, it’s one of more the pieces are broken then it will not make contact to the base of the keyboard and therefore it will not work, so you may need to buy a new laptop key or a new keyboard.

    I suggest that you replace the defective keyboard which is easy to do and costs about $15.  Procedure is available on youtube.

  • I would go about it the following ways:

    1) reseat the keyboard (could be a connection, cable issue

    2) If possible, try a known good keyboard

    3) Try reinstalling the driver and/or see if you are having the problem in BIOS

  • I ended up buying a new keyboard and it's all fixed now.

    I have dell Inspiron n5010, and my keyboard's refused to work well. The top numeric keys and also some other keys do not function well. What should i do ? Does the laptop need servicing.. ??

    I would suggest you to follow the below mentioned steps which could fix the issue:

    1.Turn off the computer. Unplug everything except the power cord, including the following: Speakers, Printers, Scanners, USB devices, USB flash drive or other external storage devices, External Monitor, External Keyboard, and External Mouse.

    2.Turn the computer back on and retest the keyboard.

                      • When the keyboard does work correctly, attach one external device at a time and test the keyboard to see which one may have caused the issue.

                      • When a specific key is not working, turn off the computer and use a can of compressed air to clean around the problem key and then retest the keyboard.

                       • If the problem only occurs in a specific application program, try another application program, such as Notepad and then test the keyboard. If the problem only occurs in a particular program, you may need to troubleshoot that particular program.

                       • Uninstall or disable any software that may change how the keyboard operates. This software includes: Keyboard macro programs and External keyboard drivers.

    3.Try an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard to test if it responds correctly.

    After following the preceding steps and the notebook keyboard still does not work or neither work correctly, then I would suggest replacing the keyboard.

  • Sir,

    I tries doing the above, apart from blowing it with a blower. I also removed the battery and pressed the power button in case it resets the keyboard, and put the battery back again, but my keyboard is not working. i now have some more of the keys not functioning. Its just been two years that m using this laptop, n m currently using a usb keyboard. have the drivers been updated and m not aware of? 

    P.s: even when the usb keybord is attached, the laptop keyboard does not work :(

    If USB keyboard is working fine while plugged in to the laptop and if Laptop keys are still not responding, then your computer Keyboard might be bad and needs to be replaced.

  • Hi Debbie, I can assure u that it is a physical prob, I'm the physical problem..lol

    To begin with I'm 40 <Admin Note:language removed per TOU policy~RK> 7 and only got to start learning the <Admin Note:language removed per TOU policy~RK> about a year ago. And I'm blondlol

    I k now all of u on here are gonna get a laugh from this question.
