I have a three year old Dell inspiron 1525. Just recently, when I am typing on Microsoft Word and gmail the letters/characters will occasionally "jump" to a different location in the document or message. I will notice that the word I was typing has stopped and then I see that the next letters have ended up on another line. Could something be wrong with the Dell keyboard?

It is possible that keyboard has some issues, most of the time its the touchpad. Sometimes you are unaware that your palm is touching the pad while typing. Here are some steps you can try ;
1. Update Touchpad Driver ; http://dell.to/yyFYX1 (after installing try to observe if problem will re-occur)
2. If available, try to plug in an external keyboard and use it to type. (just to check if built keyboard causes the issue)

I tried #3 and followed all the instructions to troubleshoot the touchpad. The result was to make the touchpad completely inoperable. Was able to use the left "mouse" key to get back to the touchpad menu and reset it to default. What a mess. Would not recommend #3 instruction.
Have you tried steps 1 and 2? Will the cursor still jumps into places?

Could this be yet another issue without solution? Sigh.
I tried #1, but not #2 yet. The cursor still jumps around and now whole sentences will completely disappear when typing in Microsoft Word.
Okay, just try the second step, so we can rule out which is causing the issue.
The jumping cursor does not seem to occur when using an external keyboard, however, the problem can be intermittent so it is difficult to say for certain. It does suggest the built-in keyboard may be at fault. If so what can be done other than replacing the three year old laptop? Or just living with a jumping cursor?
It is possible that Touchpad or Keyboard is malfunctioning. You can try to reseat these devices (Disassembling of palmrest requires technical training) but if you think you can do it, you can try.

(In palmrest you can just reseat the touchpad connector)

No longer on warranty. However, the problem I was having with the jumping cursor seems to have stopped. Thanks for your help.
