I got a popup and an attempt to install an exe file when i browsed a site with my virus software on.  It then went to priviledge escalation mode, and at that point I hard powered down the computer.  WHen I attempted to restart, i got the post 7 beep.  Removed the cmos backup battery, replaced, tried again, same beep.  I have the hard drive on an USB harness on my lab server and the partitions show up fine.  Haven't run a virus scan yet.  All of the answers I see for the same problem indicate a failed processor, but would this happen concurrently with an attempt to install a trojan?  Windows 7 btw. no new hardware installed prior to the error.

  • Hi Mz777,

Welcome to the Community. 7 Beeps on startup on a Inspiron M5030 means a processor failure. If you are under warranty click on my User name on top, and click on Send Email, with your service tag, address and phone number.

    Thank you

  • I removed the hard drive to perform data recovery on my server.  On these machines, does that void the hardware warranty?

  • Hi,

Sorry I dont know how I missed this. Removing the hard drive is part of the troubleshooting process in technical support. So this will not void the warranty.

  • Hi,

I am having the same problem. Not sure what caused it but I have the same 7 beep code and computer wont turn on or do anything. I tried calling dell for technical support but the phone keeps hanging up on me when they try to transfer. I have had mine for 2 years now so its expired. I dont know much about computers. How do I go about fixing it if I dont have the warrenty anymore? Thanks for your time!

  • Would you know how much the warrenty is if I have to buy a new one in order to get this problem fixed? And if I buy the warrenty is this something that can be fixed 100%? Is this an easy fix?

  • I had the very same problem, 7 beeps on start up. A lot of people have had this problem, I have just SOLVED the problem on my laptop. It is a fault with the motherboard. (not the cpu well in y case it was not) What I did was to remove the motherboard and reflow the gpu and northbridge chip with a hotair reflow system. That was it, laptop up and running again. :-)

  • Hi everyone, I have been asked to be a bit more specific on my fix of the dell m5030 motherboard 7 bleeps at start up fault.

below i have circled the 2 chips that i reflowed with a hot air rework gun (bought of ebay for other repairs i do fixing mobile phones lol) the system I have is a £70 solder/reflow station model number W.E.P 876D but any hot air rework gun should do the trick. (no not a hair dryer lol)

now the first thing i did was to drip some no clean flux under the first chip from all 4 sides to make sure the flux got underneath the chip nice and good, it does not matter if you use too much, you want to see the flux come through from each side as you tilt the board one side at a time. (had i known this was going to work i would of make a video lol) (its very simmiler to the reflow tecnique on an xbox 360 red ring of death fix, google reflow xbox 360 and you should find some videos explaining this a little more) then once under the chip has a good supply of flux i heated the chip at about 350 with my hot air gun for a good 2-3 mins never holding the heat in one spot, I moved the hot air in a circular motion over the chip. then i moved onto the 2nd chip and repeated exactly what i did with the first chip.
then put the motherboard back together and it fired up perfectly.
Sorry for any spelling mistakes and if my explaination is not that good, Im not too great at explaining things lol. but if anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me and i will do my best to adive you.

Im not 100% sure why I thought of doing this, I guess i just thought I had nothing to loose, and was kinda thinking from what i had read on the net that these boards seem to overheat and then stop working, which is exactly was the xbox 360 does, the chips get too hot so the solder under the chips do not connect to the board correctly any longer thus causing a motherboard fault, So I thought maybe a reflow would fix it, and in my case it did. :-)

hope this helps anyone else with this fault.

  • If it is a manufacturing fault why are dell not issuing a recall to do a proper repair or is it as Royan states...........

  • Hi Royan

I too have a Dell Inspiron M5030 which has failed with 7 beeps on start up.

It's still under warranty so Dell are trying to repair it. unfortunately it has now had 3 yes 3 mother boards in the last 5 days. The last board lasted all of 7 hrs before failing. Going off the forum and the Dell website it's the CPU that's causing the problem and taking the board out at the same time. But the Dell help centre will NOT send a CPU out, all they keep saying is it's the Mother board.

the laptop has had a new charger and battery so it's not an over voltage problem, and the only things attached to the Mother board are the CPU, wireless card (which has been changed too), DVD and hard drives. However the Dell call centre will not agree that it needs a new CPU and have even said that it's the CACHE that causes the problem and not the CPU and that the information on the web site is incorrect.

Now Dell tech support are saying they can not get a CPU so will come out and change the mother board again!

the warranty still has 2 months left to run so at this rate we will have aprox 30 mother boards by then.

Do you know what the problem is with getting Dell to supply a new CPU?

  • Be careful John ...... I got the 3 motherboard new battery and charger treatment as well. During these "Repairs" my Warranty expired and Dell  did the whole Pontius Pilate thing and washed their hands of me.

    Motherboard replacement Doesn't work !
