Keyboard/touchpad not working sometimes

I've had my Vostro 1520 for almost 2 years and it is running on Windows 7 64-bit. For almost the entire time that I've had the laptop, randomly when I boot, the keyboard will not be working at the Windows login screen. Usually, I will use the on-screen keyboard from the "Ease of Access" menu to type my Windows password and the keyboard will start to function once I am logged into Windows. Alternatively, rebooting usually will resolve the issue, but causes a little more wait time before I can begin using my computer.

Recently I've noticed the touchpad behaving similarly. The difference is that it does not start working after I log into Windows. I've checked the device manager when this happens, which shows the touchpad to be working properly, but the only way I can get it to actually work again is to reboot.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue or what I might do to resolve it. Like I said, it seems to happen randomly. I always shut down my laptop from the Shutdown command and wait until it is completely powered off before closing the laptop to avoid any issues with sleep mode.

    Welcome to the Community. I suggest you to uninstall your touchpad drivers, and use the below link to reinstall it. To uninstall go to device manager, click on the symbol next to pointing devices, right click on the Alps touchpad driver and click on uninstall and confirm it, once its removed use the below link to reinstall it, and restart your computer a couple of times.

    I also suggest you run a scan on your computer, you can use malwarebytes available on the internet, and also check your startup programs that could this.

  • I did uninstall the touchpad drivers a few days ago and I haven't noticed the issue since then regarding the touchpad. However, the computer was completely wiped with a fresh install of Windows installed about 2 weeks ago, and since the issue has occurred on and off over the life of my laptop, I don't think it is a malware issue regarding the keyboard. Like I said, the keyboard works once I get logged into Windows, but in order to login, I either have to reboot for the Windows logon screen to recognize my keyboard or I have to use the on-screen keyboard to log in. I would think if it was a drivers issue, the issue would still exist once Windows was logged in, but then again if it was a hardware issue, that BIOS wouldn't recognize my keyboard upon first boot.

    Even though I've seen the keyboard issue many more times over the life of my computer, the behavior seemed similar when I first saw it with the touchpad. Perhaps, the issues aren't related at all.
