Replacing Vostro 1000 fan? what part and how to do it?

This question is answered

Over the past couple of months, the fan has been dying on my Vostro 1000 laptop, running intermittently and allowing the computer to overheat in just a few minutes.  The diagnostics tests indicate that the fun is not running at all.  I see that Dell has both a replacement fan and the heatsink available for my laptop on their website.  However, I do not know for sure what I need to order and how I actually go about replacing the fan part.  Do I probably need the fan only?  Or should I order the heatsink and the fan both?  (This computer has been out of its warranty period for well over a year now so that's not a factor.)

So I am really asking two questions...  first, what part(s) do I need to order?  and second, how do I actually get to the area where the fan is housed so I can replace it? I have tried searching the internet but couldn't find anything that specifically showed / explained how to do it for my computer.  Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

  • The heatsink doesn't need to be replaced but probably needs  a good cleaning.  Remove it, remove the thermal material underneath, clean thoroughly and replace the thermal interface with new material.

    The fan is this one:
