Many people have reported problems playing HD videos off Youtube with their Studio 17 1747. The following instructions have been reported as a fix.
First, be sure to be running the newest files from Dell, the most current updates from Windows Update and make sure your machine is clean of viruses.
Step 1 -- Install newer display drivers:
Step 2 -- Download and install Flash 10.1 Beta 2
Step 3 -- Reboot
Now, full screen flash should work just fine. Additionally, you will find that driver is significantly quicker than the factory driver, at least 30% by my rudimentary tests. These instructions come with absolutely no warranty, use at your own risk! Be sure to scan all files with your own anti-virus software, etc.
It works for Dell Studio 1557 too. Thank you for the info. Also I heard ATI driver version 10.3 beta has leaked out & it fixed this problem.

I can confirm that this happens on new Dell Studio XPS 16 laptops with the Radeon HD 4670. I received 2 identical laptops from dell that can't make it through a full screen comedy central video reliably.
Also, your post mentions the Studio 17 1747. Interestingly enough, Dell currently does not seem to allow you to buy a Studio 17 1747 with a Radeon video card. Maybe they realize they were broken.
I don't understand how Dell is still selling laptops that can't watch full screen comedy central videos out of the box. And at the same time, you cannot download a driver from ATI.com that fixes it?
Thanks for the post. I've been experiencing a similar problem with a new Dell Studio 16 with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570. My issue is with black screens and very slow computer when using full screen video/graphics with Facebook or online TV videos..
I'm wondering if the ATI mobility download you mentioned is compatible with my graphic card?
The file dropper web site doesn't say a word about which cards are compatible. Any ideas?..Thanks

For those of you experiencing this problem, please don't forget to uninstall the current version of Flash before installing the newer, beta, version (10.1 beta 3)

I want let everyone know that I don't think that this is a 100% fix at the moment. I was able to reproduce this crash on my new laptop VERY EASILY before I followed these steps. I installed the beta ATI drivers only and I was still able to reproduce this problem VERY EASILY. Once I installed the beta flash version also, everything seemed fine. I managed to go a month watching full screen flash videos. Installing both of these definitely made the problem MUCH BETTER. But eventually, my laptop crashed on a full screen flash video once again. So far it has only happened that one time. Maybe it was an unrelated crash, but maybe not.
I'm disappointed that it may not be a 100% fix, but also somewhat satisfied that the problem doesn't appear to be a hardware problem. Hopefully once the ATI drivers and flash become stable, I won't ever experience a crash again.
I still don't understand how Dell is selling these laptops with these video cards. I returned my first laptop before figuring this out. I'd think there'd be lots of people complaining.
yes, you will experience crashes again.
maybe not with flash, but I can assure you you will, with HDTV, bluray or whatever makes your ATI display adapter change it's frequencies and voltages. Until dell releases an acceptable solution (ATI bios + ATI drivers + Intel motherboard drivers + .... whatever it takes to get the 1747 stable).
the A08 Bios is up, let's check if it corrects things (I personnaly won't be able to test until the week end)

Well .. I took Todd's advice and let my 1747 "settle down" along with "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" so was happily going along with the Flash 10.1 Beta 2 - thinking all my troubles were over. Only to find that when I logged on today to the livestreaming site I use frequently (like every day), the dear old Dell froze into a black screen (with audio still going) and then just ... froze altogether so I had to reboot. This happened a couple of times before I decided to download the Beta 3 version - and this seems to have done the trick. But now I'm wondering how long before this happens again ... and if I returned the computer, am I going to face similar problems with another manufacturer?
Maybe Todd can tell me if I should also download the A08 Bios that I've just seen on my service tag site - and the Intel driver? I'm not computer literate particularly - I can whiz round all the software but as for drivers/bios etc etc .. I'm clueless. As my husband said - when you buy a car, you don't expect to become a mechanic!!
Ok, forget everything that I said before. I just called Dell to return my second brand new laptop. Both of the laptops had this problem.
After applying this fix, flash videos that would previously crash, would work! However, my system has been unstable. It's been freezing suddenly. Sometimes while playing flash, other times completely randomly. It just crashed on me twice in about 30 minutes. I guess that's what happens when you install leaked beta ATI drivers from some filedropper link from forums.
My laptop is the Studio XPS 1645 with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670.
I've come to the conclusion that there is currently no way to make this line of laptops stable. Maybe in the future it will be. Maybe. But so far it's been almost 3 months since my original laptop order and all that I've been doing is trying to make this laptop stable. I'm tired of flashing the BIOS, trying new video card drivers, running diagnostics tests, reinstalling flash. Nothing has made either of my laptops stable.
Dell, I suggest you get someone to look into this issue. As you currently sell the laptop, it can't even complete a full screen flash video from comedy central. Thankfully, this is no longer my concern since I am no longer your customer. Bye.
I tried all of the fixes and nothing worked for HD video on my machine. Yesterday I uninstalled the Sound Blaster X-Fi software and now it works perfectly.
It will take time before I know if it solves the random lockup/freeze issue.
I noticed that you have a sound blaster X-FI pci soundcard, here is something for you to try that after 2 months of troubleshooting, working with techs, replacing hardware, and re-installing the OS 6 times. Make sure all of your software is windows 7 compatible, not all drivers work well some work better if they are just youre windows generic ones that are detected after plug and play. If you go to the creative website it states that if you have another sound device i.e. HD audio on the motherboard, make sure it is disabled before loading the new drivers for your creative pci soundcard. Disable the HD audio in device manager and not in the bios. I tried the bios and still got freezing. I have the HD audio disabled and sound from the X-FI pci soundcard and works great. One other thing reseat the memory sticks. Randomly my videos in fullscreen freezes but I can unfreeze it if I go to task manager and stop the process. I believe that is a flashplayer issue. Hope this helps.
None of those links work. This problem is still existing and there's no solution. They should pay us back our money!
Did you update the BIOS?
Yeah. I have the latest BIOS. I'm not sure now if updating the latest just released ATI Control Center fixes the problem. But when the laptop actually overheated and turned off playing New Vegas it started to crash again, so I reinstalled the latest ATI Control Center. It's been fine for couple of days now.
But I'm not sure if I can use the unit in anything demanding without overheating it. Maybe next winter if I leave the house heating turned off.
Hi everyone. It may be a bit late, but I believe I have a solution that hopefully still helps some people out. I had this problem last year with my Studio 1747. Sometimes when watching HD videos (both streaming and on the harddrive), the program I was watching it in would crash. I even had the blue screen a few times when attempting to watch these videos in full screen mode. Naturally, Dell support had no answers for me. But I was eventually able to fix my problem (and hopefully yours!)
SOLUTION: Turn off hardware acceleration! The moment I did this, I have never had a problem again for about a year, after over 10 crashes in the first few days.
To turn off hardware acceleration (Windows 7), do the following:
1. Choose Start > Control Panel.
2. Double click Personalization and select Display Settings.
3. Click Advanced Settings.
4. Click Change Settings on the Troubleshooting tab.
5. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None.
6. Click Apply and then click OK to accept the new setting and close the dialog box.
7. Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog box.
8. Restart Windows.
Viola! I hope it helps! If not, it is most likely a different problem than I had, and I wish you luck in solving it!
