I have a silver Dell XPS M1710 laptop with a Silver mettalic keyboard. The backspace key has come off and have asked dell to replace the keyboard under my extended two year warranty. The have come twice now with the same dull grey plastic keyboard, not a shiny Silver matallic one. It is plainly the wrong colour and makes my laptop look odd and cheap (it wasn't cheap!). Has anyone got any experience of getting a replacement keyboard what did you get? I find it hard to believe that Dell would manufacture a milllion Silver laptops with silver keyboards and yet have none spare to replace a broken one except a dull plastic one. Dell say the only part they have is the grey plastic one.
This will end up costing me money for when I come to sell the machine it will plainly have the wrong colour keyboard. You wouldn't buy a blue car with red wing mirrors would you?
Anyone any ideas? I am replacing both of my M1710 machines next year and am seriously considering going elsewhere....
IMO, you're well within your rights to expect a like-for-like replacement, not just whatever cheap plastic keyboard they have
Emphasise to them how much the cheap replacement is likely to end up costing you resell value!
Notwithstanding the fact that you're entitled (AFAIK?) to a like-for-like replacement. You didn't pay good money for an extended warranty, to accept being fobbed-off with a cheap alternative replacements
From experience, I've found that: “Beauty is in the eye of the beer-holder”!!

Quite, exactly what I thought but who do I complain to?
I have had four phonecalls now and two engineer visits. I have told the lady on the other end of the phone that I am unhappy, she got het manager who trotted out the line "it is the only replacement keyboard we have, it has the right part number so it is all we can order for you"
Does she care? probably not at 8000 miles away.
Does anyone know where I can take this up in the UK? Where can I write to or phone to take up my case within the UK.....
I am not happy, my lovely silver XPS M1710 does not look good with a cheap and nasty grey plastic keyboard. It is unbelievable that they do not have ANY silver ones.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can suggest something.....
