Inspiron e1705/9400 CPU Upgrade possible?

This question is not answered

Hello,

I've been researching past 3 hours to find out if I can have my current T5600, 1.83 upgraded to a faster CPU. I've been using   "Inspiron e1705/9400 CPU Upgrade" in Dell Forum and Yahoo but I wasn't able to get any decent information.

My warranty just expired so I've upgraded the memory to 4 gig with Vista business 64 bit and  I'd love to upgrade the CPU to turn it in to a perminent desk top.

1. Service manual says the CPU can be replaced but I read that some CPUs are perminiently embeeded on the monther board.  Is the CPU replaceable?

2. If the cpu is replaceable/upgradeable, what are my choices?

3. If the CPU can not be upgraded, can the motherboard with fast cpu replace my current motherboard andwhat are my choices?

Here is my currrent spec.

    Yes, it is replaceable.

It's the last of the Socket M systems - the T7200, T7400 and T7600 are the fastest.  You CANNOT use any socket P CPUs (i.e., T7x00 with x = odd or above 6, Pxxxx, Xxxxx, nor any of the 1066 MHz bus mobile CPUs.

    3. If the CPU can not be upgraded, can the motherboard with fast cpu replace my current motherboard andwhat are my choices?

None.  Notebook boards are proprietary - no upgrades.  The only board that fits is the one you have.

  • Thank you very much for your reply.   It is very clear to me now.

I was a bit saddend by current price on t7600 chip.  Ebay has them starting at $260.   I am debating now if it is worth the upgrade from 1.8 to 2.33 for $260.   One moe self debate to add.....

  • Look for a T7400 or T7200 - they're barely slower and a lot less expensive.  None have been made in a couple of years, so the supply doesn't keep up with the demand, even for used ones.

  • I would like to hear from anyone that has placed a T7400 into the E1705 and if it is working without any errors at startup? I had one in my E1705 and get a "Microcode failed to update" every time after POST. I therefore removed it from the system.

I might be imaging things but I noticed almost 0 performance gain with the T7400 over the T2700 I currently have.

Anyone want to buy a T7400?
