Last June, sneakymoose started a conversation on the Dell Forums about issues with audible clicking noise and some Seagate hard drive firmware revisions.

If your PC was invoiced with any of the hard drives listed below before February 16, 2009, the best thing to do is to update to the latest hard drive firmware revision — version DE17. The download and installation instructions are web posted at the Drivers and Downloads section of Support.Dell.com.

Here’s the list of Seagate hard drives that we recommend a firmware upgrade:

·         80G - ST980411ASG DP/N N528F

·         120G - ST9120411ASG DP/N M412F

·         160G - ST9160411ASG DP/N G970F

·         200G - ST9200423ASG DP/N J587F

·         250G - ST9250421ASG DP/N K850F

·         320G - ST9320421ASG DP/N N530F

DP/N means Dell Part Number, which can be found on your invoice or system configuration page. “ST980411ASG” is an example of a manufacturer’s part number, which you can find in Device Manager.

Here’s an example of what you would see when you download the firmware, once you have selected your system by service tag or model. The file you will be looking for will be under the SATA Drives section. Click on the “Seagate Hardware” link. Then you can choose to download the version to run from floppy or hard drive. Be sure to read the installation instructions on the next page after choosing which version you want to run. Be advised these downloads are a method of creating a bootable CD or USB key that will be used to flash the firmware, not a flash run from the hard drive itself. The installation instructions for each file type are posted below, just in case you miss them at the download page.
