Touchpad Stopped working on XPS M1330 Vista 32 bit [SOLVED]

Answered (Not Verified) This question has suggested answer(s)

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some help in getting my touchpad back working. I have an XPS M1330 with Vista 32bit that I use a bluetooth mouse with normally. I went to use the touchpad recently and it had stopped working.

I started the device manager and found that there are 2 devices that are in an error state. One the "Dell Touchpad" and the other an isatap device under the network adapters category. Both of these items have the following error when I look at their properties;

"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

Checking for solutions (both online and not) does absolutely nothing. I reloaded the drivers a couple times restarting inbetween, and trying them without bluetooth enabled just incase the bluetooth mouse was interfering (never did before) but I still can't get anything working.

I then tried installing the Synaptics driver directly from their site, and I get the same problem.

Has anyone else run into this problem? Anybody have any suggestions ?

Thanks!

  • This is the same driver I used. And yes, the problem is with the touchpad.

The bluetooth mouse is working fine.

  • I would suggest running diagnostics on the touchpad,re-boot and hit f12 key at boot screen.Next select dell diagnostics, let the first set of tests run and select extended test>symptom tree>touchpad.Post back if any errors are reported.

  • I'll run this test soon when I have some spare time...

I think the test will come up without any problems though. I should have mentioned this before, but I have a partition with Ubuntu installed and the touchpad works fine in that OS. Ubuntu was installed ages ago, I can't think of what may have triggered the touchpad to stop working...

  • Having same issue.  It seemed to coincide with tablet software being installed.  I am not sure why I have tablet software given it isn't a tablet PC.

  • I had exactly the same experience, the tablet software installed (my mistake!) and the touchpad stopped working on my Dell Vostro 1700 running 64bit Vista Ultimate.

I first tried disabling the tablet feature from Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off. I unchecked the Tablet PC Optional Components box but this had no effect.

I then opened Control Panel > Device Manager and expanded the Human Interface Devices node.  There was an entry for IdeaCom HID Touch Screen (PS/2) so I right clicked it and selected Uninstall (and I selected the option to remove the driver).  The system prompted me to reboot and hey presto, when Vista restarted my touchpad had come back to life.

  • Thanks to everyone for their input, especially catchmatt!

This solved my problem, I don't even remember installing the touch screen drivers! Oh well, at least others can search this problem and get a solution easily!

    -- SOLVED --

  • This solved my issue as well, at least partially.  I deleted the driver and rebooted and it keeps re-installing my driver.  It seems this is a Dell issue.  Why the drivers for a PC without tablet usage?  Why are the drivers corrupting the keyboard mouse?

It looks like I'll have to reboot regularly until this is solved

  • I am having the same issue even after fresh install. I have no idea what is going on. Only happens after a few hrs of use and regardless of power management options.
