Inspiron 8600: PCI bus 2, device 3, function 0 - Other Devices, Manufacturer Unknown

  • I'm reinstalling everything on an Inspiron 8600 following a hard drive implosion.  New drive, most everything is back up, but I have this one remaining error.  My computer -> Manage -> Device Manager -> Other Devices -> Network Controller = ?

Double click on network controller and get this error:  The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

    Device type:  Other Devices
    Manufacturer:  Unknown
Location:  PCI bus 2, device 3, function 0

I've installed the following drivers that I thought would address this problem:

    Network:  Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller, v.v4.23 - NDIS5, v3.07 - DOS, A11 rel. 9/30/2004

    Network:  Intel (R) Pro/Wireless 2100 LAN miniPCI adapter, v.7.1.4, A18 rel. 7/26/05

Also ran Broadcom Diagnostics Utility - all reported back ok.

What specific driver am I missing?  I don't have the Dell Systems/Utilities disk so I've been pulling all the drivers from the Dell website.
  • You need to install the notebook system software and chipset driver before the network driver will load.

The other missing driver is probably the TI Cardbus (PCMCIA) controller driver.
  • Thank you for your suggestion. I'm unclear as to what "notebook system software" would be. I found a thread suggesting installing the chipset driver, which I just did a little bit ago. You seem to be suggesting that there is an installation "order" that one thing comes before another. The following list excludes the chipset driver, which I downloaded separately. I've installed the following drivers (in no particular order): fileid batchName BatchGUID directory File Details Release Date Date Added Downloaded Actions IsSecure FileName 97591 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 video Video: ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Series, v.8.11.29.26, A03 (458KB) 3/18/2004 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove 113177 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 network Network: Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller, v.v4.23 - NDIS5, v3.07 - DOS, A11 (6.52MB) 9/30/2004 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove 118248 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 audio Audio: SIGMATEL STAC 9750 AC97, v.5.10.0.3952, A15 (4.37MB) 12/14/2004 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove 120687 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 app Application: Dell Driver Reset Tool, v. 1.02L (DiRT - External Zip) , A01 (632KB) 1/26/2005 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove 125723 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 utility System Utilities: Dell Notebook System Software, v.3.11.0, A18 (50.5MB) 3/28/2005 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove 133890 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 bios BIOS: Dell Inspiron 8600 System BIOS, A14 (571KB) 6/30/2005 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove 134322 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 comm Communications: Conexant D480 MDC V.92 Modem, v.7.23.01, A16 (1.58MB) 7/7/2005 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove 135983 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 network Network: Intel (R) Pro/Wireless 2100 LAN miniPCI Adapter, v.7.1.4, A18 (30.8MB) 7/26/2005 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove 137855 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 video Video: ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Series, v.8.162-050803a2-025875C, A06 (24.6MB) 8/17/2005 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove 141506 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 app Application: Sonic Solutions DigitalMedia v7, Plus v2.0.0.1 (82.0MB) 9/22/2005 11/27/2007 N/A Download Now Remove 148896 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 app Application: Sonic Solutions DLA 5.x, Roxio DLA 32bit v5.2 (7.29MB) 11/30/2005 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove 150697 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 app Application: Sonic Solutions Record Now 7.0 (Dual Layer), 4.98, Build: 498B12A (9.02MB) 12/15/2005 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove 152055 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 network Network: Dell TrueMobile 1400 WLAN, TrueMobile 1300 MPCI Card , TrueMobile 1300 PCMCIA, Wireless 1350 WLAN MiniPCI Card, Wireless 1450 WLAN miniPCI Card, Wireless 1350 WLAN PC Card, _Wireless (US) WLAN Card, Wireless 1370 WLAN MiniPCI Card, Wireless 1470 Dual-Band WLAN miniPCI Card, Wireless 1390 WLAN MiniCard, Wireless 1490 Dual-Band WLAN MiniCard, Wireless 1390 WLAN ExpressCard, v.4.10.40.0 / 4.10.47.3 , A09 (48.6MB) 1/6/2006 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove 161041 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 app Application: Dell Crash Analysis Tool, v.1.0.0.6 (EMT), A05 (1.08MB) 3/26/2006 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove 174171 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 app Application: Dell QuickSet, v.7.1.10, A38 (7.98MB) 7/27/2006 11/27/2007 11/27/2007 Download Now Remove
  • Dell Notebook System Software was installed. It's on the list. (for ease of wading through the previous post/paste disaster)
  • The order of install does matter:

    1. XP.
    2. SP2 if not on the XP CD.
    3. The notebook system software
    4. The chipset driver

    Then all the other drivers.
  • Ok. So, I'm out of order. Assuming I have XP SP2 installed, can I reinstall the two driver packs in order or should I just start over from scratch with everything? I haven't loaded any software at this point, so it would just be a time function to pave the drive and begin anew.
