  • Hi exm52626,

It appears that the Media Card Reader drivers are corrupt. You may try updating them by following the below mentioned steps:

    • Click on the link http://dell.to/18NmI2D.
    • Enter the Service Tag of your system and select the operating system.
    • You will find the Realtek Card Reader driver under 'Chipset'.
    • Download the driver and follow the on screen instructions to install it.

If the issue still persist, please share the screenshot of the Device Manager. Also, share the Hardware Id of the device showing exclamation mark. Here are the steps:

    • Open Device Manager.
    • Right click on the device which has the exclamation mark.
    • Click on Properties from the drop down menu.
    • Click on Details tab.
    • Change the Properties to Hardware Ids from the drop down list.
    • Share the information listed under Values.

Hope this helps. Please reply with the results.

    Thanks & Regards

  • Hi exm52626,

A Code 31 error is caused by any number of reasons that prevents Windows from loading the driver for the particular hardware device. Please share if you have install a device or make a change in Device Manager just before the Code 31 error appeared. If so, it's very possible that the change you made caused the Code 31 error. Undo the change if you can, restart your PC, and then check again for the Code 31 error.

Depending on the changes you made, some solutions might include:

    • Remove or reconfigure the newly installed device.
    • Roll back the driver to a version prior to your update. Here are the steps:

      • Open Device Manager.
      • In Device Manager, locate the device that you want to roll back the driver for.
      • Right click on the device's name or icon and click on Properties.
      • In the Properties window for the device, click the Driver tab.
      • On the Driver tab, click the Roll Back Driver button.
      • Click the Yes button to the "Are you sure you would like to roll back to the previously installed driver software?" question.
      • Click the Close button at the bottom of the device properties screen.
      • Click Yes on the System Settings Change dialog box that says "Your hardware settings have changed. You must restart your computer for these changes to take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now?"
      • Your computer will now automatically restart.

    • If the above steps doesn't work, then uninstall and re-install the drivers. Here are the steps:

      • Open Device Manager.
      • In Device Manager, locate the device that you want to roll back the driver for.
      • Right click on the device's name or icon and click on Uninstall.
      • Check the box to delete the software.
      • Restart the system and let the Windows update the drivers for the hardware.

    • Use System Restore to undo recent Device Manager related changes. Here are the steps:

      • Navigate to the Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools program group.
      • Click on the System Restore program icon.
      • Click Next > on the Restore system files and settings window.
      • Choose the restore point that you want to use. Check the Show more restore points checkbox to see more than the most recent restore points.
      • Click Next.
      • Click Finish on the Confirm your restore point window to begin the System Restore.
      • Click Yes to the Once started, System Restore cannot be interrupted. Do you want to continue? dialog box.
      • Immediately after logging in to Windows 7 after the reboot, you should see a message that System Restore completed successfully.
      • Click Close.

Note: System Restore will not revert any of your non-system files like documents, email, music, etc. to a previous state. Any application installed after that restore point may be lost.

If the issue still persist, please share the screenshot of the Device Manager and Hardware Ids. The above mentioned steps are shared assuming you are using Windows 7. Please share if you have any other version of Windows installed on the system.

Hope this helps. Please reply back with the results.

    Thanks & Regards
    Saharsh K
