I would like to ask if how am I going to troubleshoot my DELL Inspiron 1545 Laptop. The main problem is last night while copying files to my USB Drive, half of the screen shows vertical lines. So the trick when troubleshooting graphic problems is to determine if it is the LCD or the video card. The easiest way is plug in an external monitor to the notebook, if the external monitor shows the picture fine then the problem is with the LCD.
If the external monitor has the same problem then it is a problem with Windows / video drivers or with the video card itself.
That test ofcourse requires having an external monitor, if you don't have one then the diagnostics can help. The key to running diagnostics is to run the BIST test. Run diagnostics by starting the system while holding down the FN key or by tapping the F12 key and choose diagnostics. Allow the basic tests to start, after a moment you may notice a video test running, allow it to run and it will ask if it looked ok, you should choose no, this will start the BIST. What happens is that once the BIST starts the video signal is actually generated by the LCD and not the video card. So if you noticed the graphic problems while running normal diagnostics, you selected no, the graphics test didn't look good, the LCD would create its own signal, so if all of a sudden the image started looking good, with no problems that implies that the problem is with the video card, while if the picture still looked bad and had the same problems the LCD is defective.
So the questions that should be asked, are as follows:
While running the video test it will ask if the display looked alright. You chose no, the BIST started, did you still notice the vertical lines?
You tested with an external monitor, did the vertical lines go away?
If you answered yes to these three questions then the problem lies with the LCD. If you answered no to the questions then the problem lies with the video card.

Is this normal to some laptops released by DELL? I have seen many concerns with this kind of problem. Do we need to disassemble the laptop because the warranty of my laptop is expired. Chatting with DELL Technical Support is good but it requires payment.

That is the only error message I have seen on my laptop since half of it has vertical lines and most of it is WHITE with Yellow, Blue and Red Lines.
I also wanted to point out if you did choose no while running diagnostics, the diags will give the Error Code 0334. You will get this message everytime that you run the BIST. The question to ask again, is if the vertical lines go away once the BIST started.
Thank you for your response. The problem is the LCD in which it displays half a screen with a vertical lines on the other half. I have tested with an external monitor and it works perfectly; so the video card is functioning properly.
Can the LCD in the dell laptop be changed?

I have the same problem with my DELL XPS M1330 laptop with Half Vertical Screen Lines Problem. Here is the BIST error message.
I have to test the laptop with the external monitor. I got the laptop 4 years back and currently in Out of Warranty Support. Please let me know the approximate cost for the replacement of LCD or Motherboard (or Video Card) through DELL.
Dell will charge about $200 for a screen and about $300 to replace a mainboard.
Following can be the points of failure as per Msg: Error Code 2000-0334
LCD BIST colors seen: Yes
LCD BIST Colors seen: No

This is useful information. Thank you. Out of the points of failure you mentioned, what is the most common failure? And how can I test each individual point without having to buy new parts for all of them?
Try testing with an external monitor.If the display is fine on the external monitor then its the LCD panel and if you see the vertical lines on the external display then its the graphics card(if its integrated then system board needs to be replaced).
If you wish you can try reseating(disconnect and reconnect) the LCD cable,check for any damage on the cable and then try the LCD BIST test and also try the external monitor.

Thank you for your help. I replaced the LCD Cable and the problem is now fixed. I figured it was the cable because prior to getting solid straight lines across the screen at all times, there were glitches when the screen was moved. And there was some minor damage to the old cable. Thanks again for the help!

Where did you get the LCD cable? I seem to have the same problem on two Dell laptops.
I got mine on Amazon for around $13. It took awhile to find it. Nobody seemed to sell the exact model I wanted. I ended up settling for one that was one number off, but luckily it still worked. :)
