I have a Dell Inspiron 1370 which on boot beeps 8 times and the display is split 6 ways, two columns and three rows.
You can still see the Bios loading bar moving across until it pauses about 3/4's of the way along (which is when the beeps start).
Is this something that is likely to be a loose connection and easily fixed at home?

8 Beep Codes means its a Display failure. It could be a problem with the Motherboard or the LCD display itself.
Turn off the system. Press and hold down the 'D' key and press the power button once, do not release the D key you should see a set of colors on your screen.
If you do and the colors are fine then there is nothing wrong with the LCD display and the problem lies in the Graphics controller on the Motherboard.
Please call Dell Technical Support for appropriate part replacement.

The colour's displayed fine and were all fullscreen.
Does this mean it could be a loose cable that needs reseating?
If it is a part that needs replacing, is there a set of guidelines anywhere on how to safely dismantle and reassemble the laptop? It is three months out of warranty.
Its highly unlikely its a loose cable. An 8Beep code error shows its a problem with the graphics adapter. The test conducted on the GPU has failed, this test is irrespective if the Motherboard is connected to an External display.

I have followed the manual fully but it doesn't reference replacing the graphics card, also I can't seem to locate it?
I assume it is just a GPU under the cooling unit - is this part actually replaceable?
nine times out of 10 the GPU is part of the motherboard and not a replaceable part
