Hello. I have a 1 week old Latitude E4310 and the exhaust is always blowing hot air. I notice that the disk activity light always blinks even though the system is idle, or is it? Even though I have configured the advanced power to turn off HDD after 20 minutes (10 minutes when on battery), it seems that the HDD does not turn off at all because it is being accessed by something! What is it? Do you have an E4310? Is it hot?
Thanks in advance.
I have an e4310 that I am not too happy with so far. With XP on it it takes a long time to resume from Hibernate, the backlight usually does not respond when I start typing, and it sometimes does not go into standby when the lid is closed. Loved my e4300, but the e4310 does not seem as good so far.
I'm very disappointed with mine. I can't put it on my lap because it's too hot. It never stops spinning the drive.
I don't have problem with hibernate and resuming from hibernate.
Have the same issues, lots of hot air been chucked out, disk always spinning, very sluggish trackpad and I've noticed errors in the event log for IntelPNM service. Also I sometimes get an error that areo won't run due to a problem with some bit of software (think its something to do with controlpoint), I've had two 4310 and they have these problems STRAIGHT from the box. I'm going to take all the software off and try and narrow down some of the issues.
My users ARN'T going to be happy, and the first user to get one is a bit of a pain at the best of times.
I'm running Win7, A02 bios and the latest controlpoint software.
right I've just finished setting up the two E4310 and I would say they are both nearly unusable! mouse cursor jerks all over the screen, near constant disk access. Must be some driver or firmware issue. I've removed all DELL install software/drivers etc but still have the issue.
I have WinXP Pro in my E4310 and I don't have a problem with the trackpad. I have removed a few apps and services but the disk drive still always spins. Something is still accessing it constantly. The drive access light still blinks constantly. It is still hot to the touch!
I think the trackpad problem is down to the poor speed of the laptop and constant disk access, as the cursor also does it when using a mouse, just not as bad, but it still jerks around a lot, the performance of the e4310 is dreadfull! And as I said this is out of the box
I too just got my E4310 last week. I have the exact same issue as you describe.
I've played with the power settings and no luck.
Has anyone called Dell support? Guess that will be my Monday task... ugh.
nope not put a call in yet, been busy with other jobs, bit short staffed here this week.
Let us know how you get on. We're running Win7 on our two E4310, both laptops are 4Gb have 250Gb encrypted HDD's, and are running the latest Bios and drivers.
Both were really slow out of the box, before we added to our domain, so its none of our software or domain settings causing the issue.
A bit of good news:
We downloaded and installed the latest System Utility Software and the Intel NIC driver. At this time the heat issue appears to be resolved. Dell will continue to look into the activity light flickering issue.
I used my E4310 last night for +1.5hrs and the fan did not come on. As well the laptop did not create the excessive heat.
The HD light still flickers like crazy. I would like that resolved next.

what about the performance of the laptop? Pretty sure this is linked to the disk activity, as performance sucks!
Just got off "live chat" and am getting a new HDD for my E4310. Doing the same symptoms most of you have described. Hard drive light blinking, clicking noise every 2-3 seconds, spinning HDD, fan running almost nonstop, laptop too hot to put in lap, extremely uncomfortable to type on. Hope this fixes the issue but I doubt it. Anyone else found any solutions? Scot, you said that updating drivers for the NIC card worked to help your situation, but I have updated both the wireless and wired drivers to no avail. I still have the same difficulties. Anyone found any guidance?
Neal
Very much doubt a new HDD will fix things. I have two 4310's and BOTH have had the issue straight from the box. What disk have you got in your's? Both ours have the 250Gb encrypted disk. Got another user wanting to order one but I'll be ordering a 4300 and not the 4310
We've been experiencing the fan blowing hot air issue as well. I'd like to add one more to this thread if anyone else is experiencing this. We use PGP Whole Disk Encryption on our laptops. When using the dock station with the LCD closed since we're using 2 external LCD monitors(DVI/VGA or DVI/DVI). We don't see POST on the external displays. PGP requires a password login before it will proceed to load the WIndows OS. The only way around this is to open the laptop which you can see POST, input the password and from then on a user can use the external monitors. We're not going to distribute this model until it's fixed. We've brought this up to our Dell rep and they replicated the problem on their test systems. They're currently trying to how to correct the issue through a BIOS update. This issue is only seen with the 4310 and not 4300/6410 models.
My unit still blows the hot air after about 1min and 30sec after power up.
Although the laptop is usable, the heat issue is a major concern.
I can only hope Dell addresses the issue soon.
