Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth driver installation damages help content of Windows 7

Answered (Verified) This question is answered

Hi,

I have installed Windows 7 Enterprise Edition (x64 and also x86) on a Dell Latitude E6400.

The Dell driver download site already lists drivers for Windows 7 including the Bluetooth driver for the Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Minicard, Version 6.2.0.8500, A14, dated 05/14/2009, which is based on the Widcomm Bluetooth stack. The driver works but its installation of additional help files somehow damages the offline Windows help during installation so it gets unusable. It displays only random text at the front page and search queries do not return any results.

I already tried to save the contents of C:\Windows\Help before installation and copy it back after but that didn't help.

Does somebody know how to repair the offline Windows help? Except uninstalling the BT driver which fixes the problem but makes BT unusable.

PS:
Using x64 or x86 Win7 makes no difference.

Thanks,
tw

  • Hello,

I have found the cause of this error and there are two ways to resolve this.

    1. Edit the Windows Registry to resolve the issue with the Dell-provided drivers:

    1. Click on Start, type regedit.exe in the Search field, and press Enter.
    2. Provide consent to User Account Control if prompted.
    3. In the left hand navigation pane, expand each registry key until you are at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Assistance\Client\1.0\Namespaces\OEM\en-US\Topics.
    4. Delete the "BCRM_Bluetooth_Help" string value (REG_SZ).
    5. Close the Registry Editor and re-launch Windows Help and Support.

    2. Use an updated driver with version number 6.2.0.9700 or higher.

    1. There is an updated driver from Broadcom available on the Internet with a version number of 6.2.0.9700, which does not exhibit this issue.

    Hope that helps!

  • Hi,

thanks for your answer. Sorry for not coming back here earlier. I already had found the first workaround (registry patch) several weeks ago and I have reported it to Dell Support (Germany) back then who were not aware of the problem.

But I was not aware of the new driver version. Thanks.

Mostly my E6400 runs well with Win7. But there is still some driver for some other device missing but I have deactivated it.
