Disabling audio jack in windows 7

I ve Dell Inspiron 15R using conexant Smart Audio. My headphone pin has been broken inside the jack and despite all my efforts its not coming out. I dont have much time to give it for a repair nowadays so thinking of a workaround so that i can use speakers for the time being. Can anybody help?

  • HI, Thanks all for replying. i solved the issue with a bit of luck! Actually my problem was that my headphones were not listed in playback devices so i was unable disable it and use built-in speakers. I tried to do some edits in regedit also as it was given on few forums as a solution. So finally just to check, i uninstalled the drivers. On re-install, i can see the headphones in playback devices and now i ve disabled headphones and builtin speakers are working fine :)

  • Hi usmanchohan,

    Please follow the below mentioned steps to set the Internal speaker as the default device:

    1. Open Control Panel and select Sound.
    2. When the Sound dialog appears click the Playback tab.
    3. Verify if the speakers are listed and the right sound card listed under playback devices.
    4. If so, right click the sound device and click on default playback device.
    5. If they are not listed, Right click on the blank space and click on show disabled device.
    6. If the speaker gets listed, right click on the speaker and click on default playback device.

    Try the above steps and reply for any further assistance.

  • I want to use built in speakers of laptop. I cant, because headphone pin is still inside and so its not switching it to speakers. I followed your steps and saw "conexant Smart HD" device there. If i disable it, the sound is disabled. I cant see headphones in playback tab also.

  • Hello. There is no separate driver for the headphone -- it is all just the Conexant driver -- so the only option is what Nikhil D said, but that didn't work for you. I am not familiar with what other options are available with the Conexant driver. See if you have the option to set headphones to be the default "communication" device. If you can do that then regular audio will come through the speakers while Skype audio will go to the headphones. If you can't do that, try to find a Conexant Smart Audio control applet on your computer and see if it has an option for selecting the speakers.

    You could take the laptop to a jewelry store that specializes in repairs. They will have miniature tools to remove the broken off piece of plug from the jack.

    A workaround would be to get a usb audio interface.

  • Thanks for sharing your solution. Usually one of the first things we recommend is to re-install or update the audio driver, but it never occurred to me that it would help in your situation. I'll keep it in mind. I'm guessing your model is Inspiron 5520.
