A long time ago i dropped my laptop and the sound quit working. The audio and output jacks are a little messed up. Even though the sound doesn't work (with headphones in or not), when i open control panel sound, and say, watch a youtube video, the sound meter goes up when the video starts. This means that my sound card is not screwed up right? Would getting a usb sound card adaptar fix this? Thanks
You probably have damaged the jack and now have a failed sense pin. For an explanation see the Headphone Jack FAQ. en.community.dell.com/.../19748041.aspx
The Inspiron 1521 has a replaceable jack circuit board if you want to fix it.
A usb sound card will work whether or not the internal sound card is messed up because it replaces it, but the audio will not come through the laptop's speakers. With the external card you use headphones or external speakers.
