No more sound on XPS M1330 after installing the R171786 driver (SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio)

  • Hello,

I am using a XPS M1330 with Vista Home Premium 32bit SP1 OS.

Yesterday i saw there is a new sound driver offered by Dell (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=dedhs1&l=de&s=dhs&releaseid=R171786&SystemID=XPS_M1330&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=ge&deviceid=8907&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=3&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=235779). I installed the new driver due to sound problems on my XPS (lag, crackling output).

No error occured during the installing process.

But after rebooting the machine there is no more sound on the system, whether over the speakers or over headphone jack.

Since installing the new driver there is a red cross shown next to the speaker symbol at the systray. When i try to open the "sound mixer" on right clicking the speaker symbol the message "no audio device is installed" ist shown. In the device manager of vista the Sigmatel HD Audio ist listed and there is no problem marked.

Rollback to the previous installed driver (i think it is R167846, SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio, 6.10.0.5609, A02) did not help. Using the Vista system recovery to the moment before installing the new driver had no effect, too.

I also manually deinstalled the new driver and installed older versions (R167846, R160062), no solution.

Still no sound and the red cross sign next to the speaker symbol...

Need help please. Want to have sound back on my XPS :(

PS: I can´t view the Dell Troubleshooting Wizard for audio problems here:

  • Open control panel>single click on sigma tel, then click to uninstall.

Now open device manager>click on the (+) next to sound, video and game controllers>double click sigma tel high def audio codec>click the driver tab at top>click the uninstall tab at bottom.

Now re-boot laptop, when it starts back up windows will install a windows driver, let it.

When it finshes go to dells driver download page and install the driver you were attempting to install.

After it finishes installing,re-boot laptop. It should be working when it boots up.

  • It doesnt work for me in the order you suggested.

At the moment when the sigmatel software is uninstalled over the control panel the sigmatel hd audio entry at the device manager dissapears... So i can´t do step two.

  • O.k did you try and re-install the driver at that point?....

  • yeah, i tried about a hundred times with both driver versions, no effect.

Could it be that the hardware got damaged by installing the new driver?

This evening i will test the speakers of the xps with Dell Diagnostics. But i think there is no soundchip used. Its just the BIOS beep sound.

  • At this point i am not sure, other users i have suggested do this,it has worked for them.I do not know why after the first step the audio codec from device manager is deleted?...They have to be uninstalled from both places, control panel, then the driver from device manager.

Hopefully someone else will chime in with some help.

  • Da*n, i am working for two days on this problem and nothing is going forward :(

Just found a thread at notebookreview forums, where two users have exact the same issues and there is no solution in sight:

    Need help :)

  • I just did a google search and found the advanced audio fx engine is for your webcam app.

So i don't think that will help with the sigma tel problem.

  • Not sure if this will work, but lets try this backwards.

open device manager and click the (+) next to sound, video and game controllers.

Double click sigma tel high def audio codec>click driver tab>click uninstall tab.(make sure you uninstall both)the one that caused the problem, and the old one.

Now open control panel and single click Sigma tel>click uninstall.

Now re-boot system, and let windows install its driver. Then go to dells driver page and install the driver you had that was working, then re-boot system again.

  • Not that I know of.

Finally i gave up and played back a True Image full system backup which i have done a few days before the sound problem. Sound is working again :D

    Thanks for your effort anyway.

I guess some more people will have this problem soon.

  • Hi !

The last 4 weeks i have been trying to bring back sound in my m1330 (Vista Home Premium) it stopped after some update.

I have made more than 100 trials to re-install install delete uninstall etc etc. but no chance, i have:

    1)No audio device is installed

2)Red x in the sound mixer

Physically i have sound because i installed Ubuntu 9.04 and Ubuntu sounds works!

I have read your path of trouble and i was wondering if you came up with any solution?

Thanks in advance for your answer.
