I tried the steps you stated in safe mode but I am still not able to resolve the issue of no sound in my E1505. Any other thouoghts?

What is your operating system?
What were the circumstances when your audio stopped working?
Have you tried listening through headphones?
Did the Sigmatel audio driver seem to install properly or did you get an error message?
Have you reformatted the hard drive?

Here is what happened; My Inspiron E1505 notebook got infected while trying to download some video player from an unsafe site.
I then formatted my HD and installed XP Prof, downloaded all drivers, everything is working fine except Audio. I ran diagnostocs and speakers work fine in diagnostics but when logged in windows and I try to play any audio/video I get message no Audio Device installed, I tried headphones and even no sound from headphone. I tried all the steps you mentioned but even in Safe mode I am getting message no device found.
In diagnostics for Audio, the name of the device I got is Intel ICH 7 HD.
There are three Audio drivers in Dell E1505 support site, Itried all of them but none works.
Go to Start/Run and type "services.msc" then hit the 'Enter' key (or click 'ok'). The Services window will appear. Scroll down until you find "Windows Audio" towards the bottom of the list. Check that it is enabled, set to automatic, and running. If it isn't, double click on it and change the Startup type to Automatic, then click Start, Apply, and OK.
If the Service is off and you have trouble getting it on then there may be an additional problem that can be caused by incomplete installation of the Creative Audigy HD software where a necessary file gets deleted.
Thank you, for a month I have been trying to fix my "no sound" issue that occurred after installing a new HD and reloading XP. %o different approached and suggestions never worked until this one. Thanks a bunch!!!
