HGST Deskstar and the Win7 2.2 TB limit

This question is answered

I have two 2 TB WD Caviar Black HDDs installed in my XPS 9100. I have been looking at the HGST Deskstar (Hitachi, now owned by WD) drives that are available in 3 and 4 TB.

The ads claim there is a workaround for the Win 7 2.2 TB limit:

HGST GPT Disk Manager for 3TB Deskstar Drives

The 3TB and 4TB HGST Deskstar internal hard drive kits include access to the HGST GPT Disk Manager, an easy to use software application designed to overcome the 2.2TB limitation of Windows systems. GPT Disk Manager works with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. GPT Disk Manager is not required for Mac OSX and Linux systems.

Wondering whether anyone has tried these drives and whether the Disk Manager actually does the job.

  • Windows Vista, 7 and 8 do not require special software for large data drives.

Just to try this, I installed, partitioned and formatted a 3tb Hitachi drive with an old Dimension 2350 reconfigured with Windows 7 32-bit. The drive was fully recognized without issue.

  • Thanks!

Looks like I'll be acquiring some more real estate.
