Hi
I'm running Windows XP (SP 3) on a Dell Optiplex SX280. My DVD+/-RW drive is a Sony D56A.
Whenever I copy to a DVD-RW and eject, whether manually or via right-click, I get a blue screen and have to reboot. Everything else works perfectly and the system starts OK after reboot, but the problem happens everytime I copy and eject.
I updated the Sony D56A driver to the latest, but to no avail.
I ran the Dell Diagnostics at startup and did an extended test which said everything was working OK.
What else can I do please?
Thanks
Hi, cescoffy:
I suspect your error is an 0X7E stop error, and that you are getting this after burning with Sonic DLA when ejecting the disc. I have performed this search for you to show you how common this problem is. My recommendation is not to use DLA. Uninstall it, and use your regular burning program to burn files to a blank DVD.
If you don't have or don't care for your regular burning program, I can also recommend IMGBurn as a reliable and free burning program.
Please post back and let me know if you need more help.

Hi Osprey
I've encountered a similar problem when using Sonic BUT it's complicated by the fact that I get 1Xa stop error after using Windows Explorer to copy files across to the DVD drive and then pressing the eject button.
Thoughts?
Hi Whatamidoing,
Can you just remind me what system and OS you have? When you say you're copying files to a DVD, I assume you mean you are not using DLA, which I recommend against. So what program are you using?
Hi Osprey4
Sure .. it's a 5 -year old Dell Dimension 3100 with Windows XP Media Centre SP3, and upgraded with 2mb RAM.
You kindly advised me a few days ago when I encountered probs with my WD external HD locking up. I tried the "shoving it in the freezer" approach which has allowed me to access 50% of my mp3s off the ext HD and copy them onto my Dell comp.
Problem is that I can't pull more files off the WD external drive cos my Dell comp HD is now full! So my plan has been to move them off the Dell computer HD and onto DVDs, thereby freeing up my Dell computer HD. When I get a replacement to the WD external drive, I can copy them onto that but keep the DVDs as backup.
That's the theory at any rate. But I'm worried by your comment about DLA. TBH, I don't understand what this is all about so perhaps you could point me to an explanation of the issue, please? Incidentally, I discovered that XP doesn't recognise a DVD when it's in the DVD drive
Your suggestion that Sonic might be responsible has turned out to be bang on! I removed the entire programme and replaced it with Nero Lite 10. Haven't had any BSOD bother since ... magic!
Also whom can I consult about Event Viewer error messages?
Last but not least, I need a reliable, robust ext HD 500-100gb that won't overheat and lasts longer than 4 years! Any suggestions? or am I asking for the moon?

Ok, let me see if I can adress your questions.
In order to move your files to a DVD, you need software that can write to DVDs. Windows XP cannot do this. You should have either Sonic Recordnow or something like that, but Nero Lite will work fine.
DLA, or drive letter access, is a convenient program but is plagued with a variety of issues, the worst being that the discs burned using this program will suddenly become unreadable. So I urge people to avoid it.
External drives are all about the same, unfortunately. But again, your backup strategy should always be to have two copies of all important files. You might think about adding a second internal drive to your 3100, which makes backups fast and convenient.
Got to agree with you about DLA - worse than useless as I used it to copy files onto a DVD and found that Windows XP doesnt recognise them.
Re Nero lite seems fine but they want to charge for burning to CD format ... might look at a freebie as well because I have removed all programmes with the word Sonic in the title as I was so appalled at the mess it was causing to my PC!!
Yea lesson well and truly learned about backing up! Thanks again for the advice :)
My son went through the same pain a few years ago. Dropped his external drive and lost a lot of music. Now he's got duplicate external drives.
Glad to help!
