Dim 4600 adding Seagate hard drive - new drive not recognized

  • I bought a Seagate SATA/300 ST3500641AS-RK

    It's this one

    http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?&langId=-1&storeId=10001&splCatType=1&catalogId=10051&productId=169534&cmArea=SC3:CG6:smileyvery-happy:P1928:CL140461:SS1034645

I've got it installed but the new drive isn't recognized.

Do I have to move jumpers on the motherboard?

The motherboard is Intel Desktop Board D865PE

    http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/rl/rl_confg.htm

    or

    set the bios on startup?

    or

    is this the problem?

The old drive is connected using ribbon.

The new Seagate I connected using Interface Cable that came in the box.

Do I need to go buy some kind of adapter?

    Thanks for the help.

    I forgot to say

I would like to do what you said

make the Seagate the primary via cloning

and then eventually not use the 80gb.

Here is more info from another post of mine.

    http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_harddrive&thread.id=142020

    Thanks for the help.

  • Make sure it is enabled in the BIOS setup (F2 at boot).

Did you initialize and partition the drive in Disk Management?

    Peter

  • It turns out my

80gb drive is IDE connected by 40-pin ribbon

    and

    500gb is sata.

It is a Dell Dimension 4600i not 4600.

    80gb drive is Seagate ST380011A (ATA/ATAPI-6)

I didn't initialize and partition in Disk Management because the new drive isn't showing up.

I went to BIOS setup but didn't know what to do there.

    CDO

  • Go into the BIOS setup and make sure the drive is enabled.

    SATA Primary Drive

Identifies the serial ATA hard drive attached to the SATA1 connector on the system board.

It should be set to On (or whatever sounds similar).

If that doesn't help, make sure you have the power and data cables attached properly.

    Peter

  • I went in to BIOS and

    selected AUTO

    for SATA Primary Drive

    when I did it said

    ATA primary drive not found.

Is it possible I have the power cable connected wrong  way?

I have Main Power to P4 (smaller) to 80gb P3 to P5 then new power adapter that came with 500gb

    CDO

  • It doesn't make sense that it said ATA primary drive not found (or do you mean it said, "SATA primary drive not found"?).

Possibly you don't have the drive powered. Do you here it spinning when the power is on?

It is also possible the drive is dead.

    Peter

  • no it did say ATA

and I didn't hear anything spinning.

  • Sounds like either the drive is dead or not powered.  If it is complaining about the ATA primary, you have something wrong there also.

Hope you don't mind me cutting in.

There is this post about installing a SATA hard drive, as a secondary, to a IDE/ATA primary C:/ drive.

I have no comments on it's viability.

Personally, I would exchange the SATA drive for an IDE hard drive.

    Bev.

  • New Drive is Recognized!

    Thanks To Everyones Help!!!

I followed the steps IDE Master not recognizing new sata2 drive

Now I need to initialize the 500GB drive.

    I started to initialize

I used Seagate DiscWizard and it stopped in the middle of cloning.

I got a message that said

    Diskette Drive 0 failure.

As the SATA hard drive is installed as an additional hard drive, you need to use XP's Disk Management to partition and format the drive.

These are generic instructions for installing an additional hard drive using Windows XP Disk Management, they are by Seagate, but apply to all makes.

  • I need help again - ugggh

When I was running the Seagate Discwizard the program stopped running

and I haven't been able to get back in there again.

I believe if I can get back on to my Seagate 500gb Sata drive

    I can zero it

    and begin again.

Not sure how to do this though.

Right now I can only get to windows using the 80gb IDE drive.

  • Another thing

I have had the 80gb IDE drive with jumpers on Cable Select

(I have tried every different place also)

does it have to be on Cable Select?

What are you using Seagate Discwizard for?

Are you trying to clone IDE 80gb primary hard drive to the SATA 500gb, so that the SATA hard drive can be used as the C:/ boot drive?
