Questions about upgrading video card in Inspiron 620

This question is answered

Hey guys...I want to add a discrete graphics card to my new Dell Inspiron 620.  My power supply is rated at 300w.  Are there any decent graphics cards i could use that would be compatible with the 300w psu?  Also, if I were to upgrade my power supply as well, would that void the warranty I have on my new Dell?  Thanks in advance!

  • Many here on the forums have used the HD 5670 on their 300 watt units without any problems.

You can see by the chart below that the HD 5670 is only coming in at 190 watts under load for the entire system.   I believe the video card itself will only draw around 50-60 watts under gaming situations and when not gaming only around 20 watts.

  • The two best video cards you could upgrade to would be the HD 5670 or HD 6670 without changing the power supply.  If you do not do any gaming, then you may not need these cards and could look at something else at a lower performance level.  If you want to game at high resolution and high game settings with some of today's games, then you may want to consider a better video card along with the PSU upgrade.

If the new power supply does not cause any system issues, then it will not void your warranty.  However, Dell may ask you to put the original power supply back in depending on a particular troubleshooting issue that you may arise.

  • Thanks for the reply!  Either one of those cards would be perfect for me.  However I looked up the system requirements for those cards on AMD's website and they suggest that the power supply be at least 400w to run those cards.  Do you think the 300w psu that came with the Inspiron 620 would still manage to run them or should I look into upgrading to a new psu anyway?

  • Ok I'm a little confused....on AMD's website it says the HD 5670 requires at least a 400w psu.  On VisionTek's website it says at least a 300w psu.  I really want to avoid buying a new power supply, but I also don't want to risk damaging my system.  Any advice?
