I want to add a video card. I've figured out that I need PCIe x16, but I don't know which version. Evidently they aren't all backward compatible. Do I need to go into BIOS to figure out the version?
The Slot is only Single Card Wide. The Tower Supports 75W cards. GDDR5 Radeon HD 6670 single slot card works fine. If you get a dual slot card you have to cut off the vent to get it in the socket.
HIS H667F1GD Radeon HD 6670 Video Card - 1GB, GDDR5
Don't be fooled by the GDDR3 cards lower prices on 6670's as they are slower.
The USFF doesn't support ANY Card.
Desktop and SFF only support THIN fanless Low profile cards like the ASUS 5450.
The article below is someone who hacked an Optiplex 990 to fit a low profile card.
The Silent ASUS 5450 does not need this kind of surgery to shoehorn a card in.

I have a SFF desktop, and I was figuring I'd have to go low profile. Do you know if the 5450 will fit without a bunch of dremeling?
There is ONE and I stress one only CARD that I know fits without issue due to it being silent and fanless and very thin and low profile.
There may be others but I tried and took back 3 cards due to the heatsink being too thick.
Asus EAH5450 SILENT/DI/1GD3(LP) Radeon 5450 Graphic Card - 650 MHz Co…
Thanks. There are a few other 5450s on newegg that call themselves low profile, but the heat sink could be an issue. Based on benchmarks, I'm starting to think the performance gain may not be worth the expense.
I can tell you that I went from a machine that would not play world of warcraft to a machine that would load and play Wow in windowed mode at 30FPS. So while its not a screamer it DOES make a difference.
This doesnt make it a Gaming Ferrari but you get what you pay for. This is why the TOWER version of Optiplex
620, 740, 745, 755 is a better deal because it supports the 75W Radeon HD6670. A low end gamer card.
Depends on what you are trying to do. Also Note that I chose the 1 Gig Card because if you don't it starts Hyperjunk stealing system ram to make up the difference.
Incidentally, newegg has the same card for 1/3 the price, after rebate.
That does no good if its not in stock.
OUT OF STOCK.
that card was replaced by the 6450 www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx
Dont use the 512 MEG card. It steals system ram via Hyperjunk.
