Replacing the Chassis Fan on a XPS8500

This question is answered

Hello everyone,

I'm wanting to replace the back chassis fan of my Dell XPS8500 with a quieter / LED chassis fan but i've been told that installing a non-Dell chassis fan may bring up fan failure errors on boot-up.

So can i ask...

1) Is this true?

2)If it is, is there and non-Dell fans that are compatible?

3)Is the back chassis fan a 92mm fan?

Thanks in advance

  • It can be true for the CPU fan, but usually not for the case fan.  92mm is correct.  Just make sure the CFM is not so low that you're not getting enough hot air exhausted from the case in your attempt to reduce noise.  I really have never found the stock Dell fans to be at all bothersome.  Unfortunately, you cannot install 120mm fans which run at lower RPMs and exhaust higher volumes of air.
