Optiplex GX620 with Windows 7 - 64bit

This question has suggested answer(s)

We are discussing to upgrade our systems with Windows 7 - 64 bit. Some of them are OptiPlex GX620 with Pentium D processor. One of my colleageus started installing Windows 7 - 64 bit to some of them. So far, she said, she haven't found any problem. Does this system support 64 bit OS?

Thanks,

Litom

  • Officially no, Dell has not listed this system for Windows Vista or Windows 7 compatibility and as such no drivers are officially available directly on the drivers and downloads page. It only officially supports 32 bit and 64 bit Windows XP. This means it should be 64 bit compatible. I would run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor to be sure it is 64 bit capable.

Unofficially it will definitely work with the 32 bit and is highly likely to work with the 64 bit. Many of the system drivers will be native to Windows 7 and/or can be taken from other Optiplex models. I have installed the 32 bit version on a GX520 for example which is very similar. In your case I would install Windows 7 following my instructions below without activating, this will give you a 30 day evaluation to see how well it runs before wasting any licenses. You should know how well it runs within a couple of hours however.

An important note on the hardware, do you have 4 GB of RAM in each system? If not I recommend you upgrade them using crucial memory or install the 32 bit version of Windows 7, upgrading the RAM to 4 GB is more recommended. See here for crucial memory, it says maximum of 4 GB but also states 4 slots that can hold 2 GB each. Run the Crucial scan on one of your machines. If you are buying RAM for multiple of these systems, it may be worth sticking 4×2 GB in one to see how much RAM it can address with a 64 bit OS (you can remove 4 GB of the RAM after the test to put in another unit). See the service manual for instructions in installing RAM, make sure it is installed in matched pairs. I would say its not worth the price putting 8 GB of RAM in each of your machines but it would just be interesting to know as a side note.

I did answer a question on this model the other day, someone wanted the 64 bit version of the OS? Do you have graphics cards in all the systems and if so what ones or is it integrated graphics? The following drivers are ones that I think should work with this model. Some are for Vista, some are for 7 but of course should work on both OS. Follow my wiki A Clean Install of Windows 7 and use the drivers below for best results:

    R282539 Dell System Software (x86)

    R282538 Dell System Software (x64)

R304259 Dell Device Chipset (x64 and x86) I don't think this one will work

    R140595 Dell Device Chipset (x64 and x86) Use if R304259 doesn't work

Video Card - I need to know what one, I will list the integrated/onboard one but get the rest directly from ATI or nVidea.

    R140545 Intel 82945G Express Chipset Family (x86)

    R140546 Intel 82945G Express Chipset Family (x64)

    R233191, R139937, R237606 and R237348 Conexant Modem (x86)

    R233198R139937R237617 and R237348 Conexant Modem (x64)

    R161008R161013R143067 Broadcom 57XX (x86)

    R161009, R161014, R143065 Broadcom 57XX (x64)

R145551 Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio (x86)

R145149 Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio (x64)

That should be a full set of unofficial Dell drivers actually. I would be interested in knowing if they all install for you as I will create a wiki about it for future use. Please also look at the device manager for any errors as the wiki mentions. Let me know if you have any and what of the above drivers work for you. Also let me know the video card.

  • "Officially no, Dell has not listed this system for Windows Vista or Windows 7 compatibility and as such no drivers are officially available directly on the drivers and downloads page." (Acutally the Vista Drivers were listed but this has become broken)

How does Windows Vista run on legacy systems - Dell OptiPlexTM  GX260s, GX270s, GX280s and GX620s? Will Windows Vista operate on these if the systems are upgraded to 1-2GB of RAM?

There ARE Vista Drivers.  No Windows 7 Drivers from Dell.  (Dell Officially Listed this system as Designed for Windows XP/Vista Capable)

You will be Much Happier with the Upgrade Result if you Get 4 Gigs of Ram and

    Asus ATI Radeon HD6450 Silence 1 GB DDR3 VGA/DVI/HDMI

The Asus Card is fanless, Silent, and fits in ALL MODELS of GX620 except the USFF.

Most of the hardware uses Native Windows 7 Drivers with the exception of the Audio Codec.

  • I was wondering why I was finding some drivers for this systems for Vista which listed this model as compatible.

I was also wondering why it wasn't made compatible.

I guess its another fault with the drivers page, beginning to lose track of them...

  • Hello,

First I upgraded the machine from P4 to pentium D 3.4 GhZ (see "Optiplex GX620 upgrade to dual core" thread)

Then I put more memory (Kingston DDR2 5300 2*2 Gb inside (the max the system bus can use ?)

Finaly I installed 7 64 (enterprise) and it works fine. I didn't to install any drivers.

The system can see 4 Gb memory installed BUT it says there is ONLY 3.49 Gb usable.... Why? Do I need to install something ?

Using DELL Optiplex GX620, Latltude D630

  • It's been a while since I posted this. Thank you all for all the replies. Three months ago, we managed to install Windows 7 - 64 bit successfully with just even 2 GB memory and was working fine. But since I had the doubt, I posted this question and even called Dell Tech Support. Dell Tech said, it's not compatible. My research also says because of its processor's architecture, it may work fine. A month of observation, which may or may not be related, we got problems with device drivers and slow performance of the system. That was why we decided to reimage again with Windows 7 but 32 bit this time. So far so good.

If Windows installs, the hardware is compatible.

Windows 8 Pro 64-bit installs without incident on the GX620 SFF. This particular unit is equipped with a P4 3.6ghz CPU, 4gb of GSKILL PC2 6400 memory, 120gb SSD, and Sapphire 6570 video card.

The system steals ram for the onboard INTEL Video.  The frame buffer steals regardless of whether or not there is a PCI video card or not being used.

If you add 8 Gigs its the same issue even with 64 bit OS.

  • Windows 8 is reporting that about 512mb is reserved for the hardware.

3.5gb is enough for the typical user, and apparently the GX620 will go to 8gb, although I haven't tried it myself.

  • It will never show 8 gigs useable though.  7.XX but never 8 total due to INTEL Crapicks.Crying

  • 7.5 gb is enough for serious work.

  • So I just came into an Optiplex GX280 desktop / the one that opens like a lunchbox. Anyways, it seems like a decent machine. It's running just a regular Pentium 4 and 2gb of ram. I upgraded the ram to 4GB and am about to install Windows 7 64 Bit. I just wanted to ask you if you think it will run ok even without the upgraded CPU and SSHD? I don't really want to put my extra 60GB Kingston SSHD in this Desktop to use as a boot drive because I have an HP DV9308NR with two hard drive bays on it's way back from getting a new 2012 NVIDIA GPU installed on the motherboard and I was going to use the Kingston 60GB SSHD if that.  I guess I'll just try out the 64 bit and see what happens. Just wondering what you thought since your running WIn 8 64 bit which is way more of a resourse hog.

  • If your CPU supports EMT64 it will work.  If it does not then it wont install.  Not all Pentium4's support EMT64.

Windows 7 32 bit will work fine.  The Driver for the audio is available on the Microsoft site.

The video would need an upgrade to Radeon ASUS EAH5450 minimum but that works too on GX280.
