Dell Optiplex GX520 Memory Upgrade

This question is answered

hello, can I Install 4 Gb memory on Dell Optiplex GX520.

What type of memory can I install?

Verified Answer
  • PC2-4200 is not fast enough for some of the supported processors FSB.

Faster Ram does not hurt anything but it may not run at the fastest speed unless the processor is also running at the top speed for the FSB.

    • PC2-4200 = 533 MHz  clock
    • PC2-5300 = 667 MHz  clock
    • PC2-6400 = 800 MHz  clock

  • Hi Geostef,

Each of your two memory slots can hold DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400 with a maximum of 2GB per slot. However, unless you use a 64-bit operating system, only 3.5GB will be recognized.

  • Hello Osprey4

    Thank you for your Help!

    Ok for the PC-5300.

    but:

Are you sure about DDR2-6400 ?

The motherboard optiplex GX520 suports the PC2-6400 or the PC2-4200 ?

    Thank you!

  • Can I use 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-8500 DDR3 1066MHZ NON ECC in my Dell Optiplex GX-520? I know the 533Mhz and the 800MHz work, but not sure about this one.

My only concern is if this memory work.

  • Hi there,

I can confirm that this memory will not work with the system as the system takes 400Mhz and 533MHz DDR-2 DRAMs, but the memory you have listed is DDR-3. DDR-3 memory will not fit in the memory slots in the Optiplex GX520.

  • hi

    Can i Use 2 gb DDR2 667 PC2  ram for Optiplex gx520.

  • You can but not all brands will work.  If your processor has 800mhz FSB then you need PC-2 6400 Ram.

    Memory:

    DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400

    Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 (non-ECC)
    Maximum Memory: 4GB
    Slots: 2
Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400 with a maximum of 2GB per slot.*
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules. How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.

  • Hi everyone,

I also have a Dell Optiplex GX520. I recently installed 4 GB of memory (using 4 GB (2x2 GB) G.Skill DDR2 PC2-6400 DIMMs). However, even though I am using windows 7 (64-bit), the total physical memory is only 3.5 GB. When I check the memory in the BIOS (version A11) it reports two 2 GB DIMMS. Is this because some memory is reserved for the video card?  Or is there another reason? That is, is the chipset (i945G) limited to 3.5 GB somehow?

    Cheers

    rw

  • Hi rlwolfcastle,

Dell OptiPlex GX520 supports maximum of 4 GB memory on the system. The operating system is showing 3.5 GB of RAM as remaining memory is used by the video card.

  • If I installed a stand alone video card in one of the free PCI slots, would that free up the remaining 500 MB of memory?

  • Hi rlwolfcastle,

Yes, if you put the stand alone video card the memory would free up but you need to purchase a discrete video card which should not share the memory from the system.

If I installed a stand alone video card in one of the free PCI slots, would that free up the remaining 500 MB of memory?

Probably not. My GX620 (with 64-bit operating system) still shows 3.5gb available, even though it has a video card installed.

  • I looked at putting a second hand card in the machine (Geforce 8400 or 9400) but before I did that I had a look at the BIOS. Under Video -> Video Memory Size, I have 8 MB selected, however I am missing 500 MB of my RAM in windows 7 (64-bit). Is there any reason for this, what is using the memory? It seems fairly ridiculous to use up 500 MB for a framebuffer for an 8 MB video card.

  • Hi,

Do you know why this is the case? It should be able to access the whole 4 GB. Integrated video memory size is trivial on the GX520.

  • Hi rlwolfcastle,

The 8MB video memory showing in the BIOS is the internal memory for the integrated video card also it will share 500 MB from the RAM on the system.
