Dimension 8400 will not boot after adding more memory

I purchased two Dell 1G memory sticks to add to the original two 512 sticks in my Dell Dimension 8400 desktop.  The 512's are in slots one and three, the 1G's were added to slots two and four.  The computer will not boot with the added memory and the following message appears on the black screen:  " }300 SE 128MB BIOS P/N 113-A33406-100"  When I remove the 1G sticks the computer boots normally but a message appears saying new memory has been added and press F1 or F2 to either boot normally or change the configuration.  I also tried adding the 1G sticks in slots one and three and got the series of beeps referred to in the installation instructions for the memory sticks that indicates the memory is not being recognized.  The new 1G memory is the recommended memory from the Dell website for my computer and is Dell memory, however it is 666 speed vs 400 speed (I believe) of the original 512 sticks.  Any help getting the computer to recognize the added memory will be appreciated.

    There are basically four reasons, why memory does not work (1) RAM not compatible to the computer (2) Faulty RAM (3) Bad memory slot [rare] (4) RAM not installed correctly.

    If you have tried installing the original 512mb modules in slots 1 & 3 and the 8400 boots without any errors, then the new 1gb modules are not compatible and should be RMA back to Dell.

    As already advised, it's better to purchase memory from Crucial.

  • I upgraded a 8400 and have exactly the same configuration--2 512's and 2 1GB and they work fine. As you know, slots 1 & 2 are not side by side since the slots are arranged top to bottom: 1 & 3, 2& 4. You need match the pairs  in 1&2 and 3&4. Put the 1 gb chips in slots one and two and the 512 in slots 3 &4. Is that the way you have arranged it? If not, change it and try again. Picture here in the manual: support.dell.com/.../parts.htm

    The slots are actually labeled in order 1, 3, 2, 4, as shown in your manual here.

    Are you sure they are paired as shown in the manual?

  • My original post did list the slots correctly.  The 512's were left in their orignal sloots which are 1 and 2 and the new memory was added in slots 3 and 4, Sorry for the incorrect information.

  • Dell could have also sold you wrong memory (not the first time).  Exactly what is the part number on the memory or the Dell stock number?

    The 8400 requires 1.8 Volt Memory.

    HERE is the Crucial Memory listing for the 8400. Their 2GB kit is only $29.99.  Crucial is guaranteed to work in Dell's and what most of the techies on here recommend.

  • I tried the 1G in slots 1 and 2 and the 512 in 3 and 4.  I received a series of beeps, the fan ran much faster than normal and the computer would not boot.

  • You probably should return the memory and buy from Crucial. You've tried everything.

  • Thanks,  I ordered the Crucial memory.  It arrived today and I installed it.  The computer booted up without a hitch.  The memory shows up properly in Setup and System Information.
