I would like to know if the first generation AMD PHENOM processors will work in the am2 socket of the optiplex GX 740?
Will second gen phenom processors work as well?
Also I have been told that the PCIe x16 slot will accept PCIe 2.0 and will be able to operate them without problems is this true?
Thank you guys.
SORRY IF these are dumb questions.
Dell only validated the following OEM (original equipment manufacturer) Phenoms. None of the retail ones -X203G AMD Phenom 8600B 2.30GHz 512x3, X039G AMD Phenom 9600B 2.30GHz 512x4
From the Manual -NOTE: The AMD Phenom processor requires the 8mb NVRAM chip and is therefore available only on models that include the 8mb NVRAM chip. If your computer has the 8mb NVRAM chip and the AMD Phenom processor, the word enhanced appears in the title on the BIOS splash screen and the system setup program screens.
Optiplex 740* Three chassis - SFF (Small Form Factor), DT Desktop, MT Mini-Tower* Motherboards - T570C SFF, T569C DT, T426C MT* CPUs - X203G AMD Phenom 8600B, X039G AMD Phenom 9600B* Power Supplies - 275w SFF, 280w DT, 305w MT

These are the Phenoms we validated -X037G AMD 9550 2.2GhzX039G AMD 9600B 2.3GhzX203G AMD 8600B 2.3GhzX206G AMD 8750 2.4GhzI do not see 2nd generation in the parts list. The PCI-E x16 is designed to provide 8 GB/sec. of bandwidth which is 2.0.
Thank you so much for that info.
would I have to do a bios update inorder to use those chips?
or is it just a direct plug and play?
is the reason why the phenom quad is the only quad that will work b/c its power compsumption is 95w?
have others been tried and failed?
or is it that they just havent tired?
would I have to do a bios update in order to use those chips?* Yes.is the reason why the phenom quad is the only quad that will work b/c its power consumption is 95w?* I only see 65w and 89w in our parts list?have others been tried and failed?* No idea.or is it that they just haven't tried?* We never tested CPUs not in our parts list.
I purchased a AMD quad cored PHENOM today it is a 9600.
this is the listing.
Where can I find the bios update that i need to install?
also what other steps do I have to take take in order to utilize this chip?
The latest Optiplex 740 BIOS version 2.2.5 can be downloaded from HERE
A Hint: Read the installation instructions carefully before updating the BIOS.
As you intend to reuse the heatsink, plan on cleaning it's base and reapplying thermal compound to the processor.
Directions for cleaning and applying thermal compound, are HERE.
You only need a small tube of thermal compound, this can be purchased from any online, or local computer store.
The Optiplex 740 User's Guide, with the procedures for removing and installing the processor is HERE

Thank you for all the help.
Will the stock heat skink work well with the phenom?
I know they produce more heat.
Which Optiplex 740 model version do you have?
The Mini Tower, Desktop, or the Small Form Factor.
I'll assume it's the Mini tower version.
Yes, it should be fine.
Note: The Optiplex 740 heatsink is a Dell proprietary part and there is no retail equivalent available.
Again thank you for the quick response.
I have the full size desktop.
I will be receiving the processor this wednesday prob. Ill update you all as to my progress.
Thank you again!
I installed the phenom got a good secure thermal paste connection.
I plug the desktop into the wall and a all i get is a solid orange light where the green power light usually is.
WHAT IS GOING ON???
Just to add,
its not a blinking orange light its a solid orange.
Did you update the BIOS before installing the processor?
A Solid Amber power button LED, indicates:
Quote, 'The Dell Diagnostics is running a test, or a device on the system board may be faulty or incorrectly installed'
Have you checked the four Diagnostic lights on the front panel?
The Optiplex 740 Troubleshooter and Diagnostic Guide, is HERE
yes the bios version reads 2.2.5
I read in other threads where you wrote to remove the ram and other installed cards. then reinstall them. I did that, nothing changed
I also read where you said to pull the mobo power cord and then reinstall it. also did that nothing changed.
what should I do?
I just edited my last post and added the Optiplex 740 Troubleshooter, give it a read and report back.
