I have a Precision 690 workstation that is two dual core Xeon CPU's in it. Can I upgrade these to quad cores? If so what CPU's will work in this motherboard?
You don't say which MB you have. Early 690 MB only supported dual core Xeon 51xx series processors. Later MY171 MB supports Xeon 51xx and 53xx (quad core) processors. These are the only processors supported.
Could you please check if my Dell Precision 690 WS sevice tag
will support XEON QUAD CORE 53xx?
Dell Precision 690. I tried installing a Xeon Quad Core 1,86 GHz (SL9MV, 1066 FSB)
as a replacement for a Xeon Dual Core 5130 2,0 GHz (SL9RX 1333 FSB ),
but got a message the cpu is not supported.
Motherboard newest revision is MY171
upgrade bios to rev A08 BEFORE replacing any CPU.
Older Motherboards DT029 and F9394: flash bios to rev A01
(newer versions don´t work with Quadcore on older mainboards)
Remove CMOS battery and AC Power plug for 3 minutes to get a full bios reset.
Then replace CMOS battery an start the system.
The bios will detect all drives and new cpu type during first start.
Don´t forget to set system time after restart.
Flashing Bios to rev A01 can only be done in DOS mode from a diskette drive
to find the file use search function on DELL support side, query: dell 690 bios a01.
Motherboard DT029, bios A01 didn´t show any issues with
Quadcore CPU Xeon E5345 (2.33MHz).

How do you know which motherboard revision you have? I called Dell parts and they told me quad cores would work in mine. As a matter fact another guy got one at the same time as I did and instead of two dual core he got a single quad so I think they will work. Where did you get the CPU's from and how much were they?
"How do you know which motherboard revision you have?"
You look at the DPN number.

Got them from Ebay. They are all more than $200 Each.
Be very wary of them if they are less and make sure there's a NON DOA warranty.
