usb root hub

  • ok i am going to look like a complete idiot with this question. i have a dell dimension 5000 series desktop running xp home. when i connect devices that need a usb2 connection the message comes up that this device will perform better if cnnected to a port as shown in the list. it tells me that i should connect to usb root hub on the computer. all my usb slots are already in use where is this root hub , do i have to somehow activate it.

  • Open Device Manager and expand the list under USB. Look for one entry that says "Enhanced". If you don't see it, your system is running as USB1.

    In that case, disconnect all USB items except mouse and keyboard. Right-click and uninstall all USB entries in the Device Manager list. Reboot and XP will reinstall the USB ports. Confirm that the Enhanced entry now appears in Device Manager

  • many thanks for your advice. the enhanced feature is shown already in the device manager, & when i click properties it says it is enabled & working fine (but obviously not). the advanced tab says it has a system reserve of 11% ?,  & the resources say memory usage & IRQ 21. although it was shown in the device manager i did disconnect & uninstall then restart as suggested, no change.

  • Try running a windows system file check:

    click start>run

    type in: sfc /scannow

    (space between sfc and /)

    click OK

    Insert XP CD if sfc requests it and reboot when it's done.

     

    Then connect only a single additional USB device (in addition to keyboard and mouse). See if just one device will run as USB2.

  • Hi,

     

    I'm going over to help my friend w/ her pc.  She says she's getting a similar usb message.  So I looked in my device manager on my E520 desktop to check out this "enhanced" entry.  None of mine say Enhanced.  I have listed.... 

    2 generic USB Hubs

    7 Intel USB Host controllers

    2 USB Composite Devices

    2 USB mass Storage Devices

    2 USB Printing Support

    7 USB Root Hubs

     

    How do I tell for sure if I have usb2?   I have Win XP sp2 MCE.

    <>According to the figure on page 1 of your Owners Manual, they're supposed to be USB2 ports in the E520. And for Windows to recognize them that way, you need a "USB2 enhanced controller" entry listed under USB in Device Manager.

     

    If anything is marked with yellow ! in Device Manager, then you may need to reinstall the chipset driver in Safe Mode.

     

    Otherwise, double-click on each root hub until you find the one with the mouse connected to it and make note of which one it is in the list. Disconnect all USB devices except mouse and keyboard. Then right-click and uninstall all USB entries, saving the one with the mouse for last. Reboot and XP should reinstall the USB ports including the enhanced controller. Then check for the "enhanced" entry in Device Manager.
